Biomass A presentation by Joshua Mikkelsen Biomass is a enormous supply of trees, plants, grass, brush, and seaweed that can be burned for heat or converted into such fuels as gasohol, ethanol, or methane. Sometimes biomass is grown as a fuel source. It consists of used plant materials, such as stalks stripped of corn, wood chips, sawdust, grass clippings, and animals wastes that are usually discarded but could be recycled for fuel. Through photosynthesis, green plants manufacture two major chemical products:
-Carbohydrates (sugar, starch, wood)
-hydrocarbons (rubber and oil)
By simple processing, both products can be converted into safe liquid fuel. Both are abundant in nature, and the fuel derived from them burn cleaner than fossil fuels. The bad things about Biomass Biomass damages the environment by removing resources from wildlife, such as herbivores not getting enough food, so they thin out, and could become endangered. Dangers include depletion of soil nutrients and soil erosion. Wood and crop wastes are normally plowed back into the land to enrich it. Because these wastes are used for fuel the soil's fertility will decline. Forest lands denuded of trees experience serious flooding and soil erosion. The leaf canopy of trees softens the impact of rainfall on the ground. Tree roots also absorb the moisture of rain. Without trees, forest soils quickly lose their nutrients from flooding and risk becoming barren deserts. Constant replacement of harvested trees would be required for any forest biomass project. Experts also agree that studies must be carefully made to determine how much vegetation can be safely removed from various soil types. Here is something you can do to change the Experts estimate that up to 400,000 barrels of oil could be saved daily if large urban areas converted their waste to energy to provide electric lighting to every residence and business in the nation. That means that if you just give your garbage to a biomass burning factory, we could save many barrels of oil and help the environment keep clean. So, how does biomass actually work? Here is a short video on how it functions. So biomass is a clean way of producing fuel conducting electricity. Although fossil fuels will not destroy Earth, it does do some harm, but Biomass is a very good source of alternative energy and should be used way more often than it is now instead of using fossil fuels that can often pollute the world.
