The 13 Original Colonies
Transcript of The 13 Original Colonies
The Southern Colonies were included in the Triangular Trade, which consisted of the Southern Colonies, Britain and Africa. Some of the goods traded in were slaves and gold from Africa and manufactured items from Britain. The Southern colonists came to America came to farm, not for freedom of religion. The Southern colonists belonged to the Church of England. Also, the colonists did not choose their own religion. The economy of New England has large farming and fishing communities. The people made their own clothes and shoes and grew a lot of their food. They grew corn and wheat in large amounts. The food they could not grow, they had shipped from England. The northern colonies had many natural resources. Fishermen caught fish such as herring, cod, and lobsters. They used whales for oil and candles. There were many trees and forests in the northern colonies. The animals that lived there were caught for their furs. They grew corn, oats, barley, and rye. Also they raised oxen, horses, sheep, cows, and hogs. The agriculture of the northern colonies was not meant for a lot of plant growing. They had poor soil and it had lots of mountains. They has harsh winters which meant short growing seasons. New England Economics Religion Natural Resources Government Agriculture The New England colonists were Puritans. Their settlement was started by Puritans. The Puritans did not accept other religions, so everyone in the colonies practiced Pruritism. The government of the New England colonies was almost a democracy. They had councels, justices, and public officers. They elected many of them. Agriculture The agriculture in the middle colonies was part agriculture and part industrial. They grew wheat and other grains. They produced iron, paper, and textiles. Government The government in the middle colonies was representative for the whole region. But before they were rebublican, they were democratic. Economy In the economy in the middle regions, farming was huge. Their cash crops were wheat, rye, and barley. They used slaves, but they were not used very often. Government in the Sothern Colonies was made up mostly by the Governor and the Governors Assembly. The House of Burgesses was founded in Viginia and it was the first official government assembly in the United States. Agriculture in the South was the best out of the three regions because they had very rich and fertile soil. Another reason would be that they had very flat land which made it easier to farm. Geography Natural Resources Government Government in the Middle Colonies was in the hands of the people. There was one representitive from each town that was chosen by the people. These representitives made up the board of supervisors. Climate By Adrienne Ashbaugh and Devin Reardon
