Songs That Relate To The Giver

Hannah Montana - I Learned From You
Imagine Dragons - Round And Round
"I learned from you that I do not crumble
I learned that strength is something you choose
All of the reasons to keep on believin'
There's no question, that's a lesson, that I learned from you"
This quote relates to how The Giver is giving courage to Jonas throughout the whole novel. The Giver told him "I will help you to have the strength," when Jonas was in a scary situation. Then, starting in Chapter 21, Jonas was forced to flee but he could because The Giver had been teaching him to have courage.
"You taught me to stand on my own
and I thank you for that
It saved me, it made me"
This relates to when the Giver realizes things must change and he said, "Having you here with me over the past year has made me realize that things must change. For years I've felt that they should, but it seemed so hopeless. Now for the first time I think there might be a way, And you brought it to my attention barely two hours ago." Here, you realize the the Giver has been learning from Jonas, as well, and that Jonas has helped him realize that The Giver can do what he wants, not just what the community says.

"We are all living the same way,
We are escaping the same way,
We are a part of the same play,
We think we're making our own way,
This quote relates to the community itself. The citizens think that they are doing their own thing, but they really aren't. They all eat the same food, have the same schedule, and do the same thing, with slight variations. However, they think that they do different things. Asher says "Games aren't your area of expertness," implying that he thinks he's sort of special for being in charge of games. But really, they all do the same sort of thing, just with slightly different jobs.
"We are afflicted by fiction,
Building a case for eviction,
Guarding a tower of ancients,
Shooting down arrows of patience, and patiently
This quote also relates to the community. The community is based on a very diluted truth. When Jonas is talking to The Giver about his science teacher, The Giver responds by saying, "They know nothing. Oh, your instructors are well trained. They know their scientific facts. Everyone is well trained for his job. It's just that ... without the memories it's all meaningless." They are told what they need to know, and nothing more, so their lives are based off fiction. Also, the point of The Receiver is to hold the memories (Guarding a tower of ancients)
The theme of
is without pain,
we are all the same people. Nobody in the community has pain, so they remain
unchanged throughout the novel. However,
Jonas experiences pain, and you watch as he changes from the experiences.
