What is Structural Engineering?

-As an entry level structural engineer, you will not be required to design a whole project (i.e. Building, bridge etc.)
What kind of work does an entry-level do?

- Many designs depend on structural integrity which affects their function and safety

- Some of these structures include bridges, buildings, machines, and vehicles which can lead to specialized fields and applications of engineering

Types of Structures

- Types of buildings are classified by their primary use and function, but they are all fundamentally constructed from the same principles

Buildings

- Many modern buildings will contain elements of both frame and shell structures with inner skeletons, often made of steel, and outer walls made of concrete sheets and /or glass panels
- Despite being made to withstand often static loads and support their own weight, building design also takes into consideration dynamic forces such as high winds and earthquakes
Building design
- They are therefore not always rigid but designed to be flexible and use innovative features to counteract destructive forces

Designs range from simple truss and arch bridges to more complex cable stayed and suspension bridges
Bridges
Bridges have been a significant part of transportation and infrastructure throughout history
There is many different designs for varying lengths and weight loads
Like buildings, bridge design also takes into account dynamic forces
Bridge design
Different bridge types can be combined to form a more stable and robust overall structure

Because people expect their buildings and other structures to be safe.
Why do we need
structural engineering?
-You will only be required to do the basics. However, it is very important to know more than others since the competition is very high.
