Transcript of Congenital Heart Disease

Basics of CHD
Unknown cause
Risk Factors:
- genetic or chromosomal abnormalities in the child (ex:Down syndrome)
-Taking certain medications, alcohol or drug abuse during pregnancy
-Maternal viral infection, such as rubella (German measles) in the first trimester of pregnancy
-shortness of breathe
-limited ability to exercise
-abnormal heart beat

*Possible to have defect with no symptoms
Congenital Heart Disease
Present State
Death rate decreased by 40% in last 18 years
More adults than children are living with CHD
Number of adults with CHD admitted in hospital has doubled in the past decade

- electrocardiogram -MRI
-chest x- ray -cardiac catheterization
-echocardiogram or transesophageal (TEE)

- based on severity of CHD
- mild= some don't require treatment
- Sever= medications, therapy, or surgery

Signaling Pathway
Incorrect Mechanism
progenitor cells
By: Maria Macias

Planar cell polarity signaling pathway (PCP)
- involves multi-complex which occurs in cell membrane
- complex involves core proteins such as fizzled (Fz), Vangl/ Strabismus (Vang) as well as scribble (Scrib)
- formation of proteins regulate PCP pathway
PCP contributes to correct specification in mesodermal germ layer
if the signaling between proteins is disturb then congenital heart disease occurs
rapid growth of heart tube
second heart field (SHF)
congenital heart defects
early embryo
pharyngeal mesoderm (PM)
Correct PCP
Incorrect PCP
