Misplaced and Dangling Modifiers
A modifier is a word, phrase, or clause that describes or changes the meaning of another word, phrase or clause in some way. To modify means to restrict or to limit their meaning.
is a word or a group of words which is improperly separated from the word it describes. Because of the separation, sentences with this error often sound awkward, ridiculous or confusing. Furthermore, they can be illogical.
a phrase or a dependent clause that is not clearly and logically related to the word it modifies. Unlike a misplaced modifier, a dangling modifier cannot be corrected by simply changing its position in the sentence. One of the ways in correcting it is by preferring active rather than the active voice or by supplying the missing subject in the sentence
a one word modifier is usually positioned before the word it modifies.
examples:
Sam drove a
fast
car.

She could easily understand the traffic signs.

I contributed
only
P500.00 for the charity event.
A phrase modifier is situated either before or after the word it modifies.
examples:

Thinking about her research paper,
Anthea decided to find articles in newspapers.

The host,
using five questions,
is able to conduct an elimination round among the contestants.
a dependent clause modifier is found most likely after the word it modifies
examples
Bianca,
who is interested in art,
goes to every art show in town.

The internet,
which has become a global phenomenon,
has contributed to the predominance of English.

The first alphabet
that consisted of 22 letters- all consonants
was invented by the Phoenicians.
The position of modifiers most of the time affects the meaning of the sentence.
Sometimes the position of the modifier makes no difference in the meaning of the sentence.
