What's the purpose of a personal statement?
How do you get this across in just 47 lines/4000 characters?
In pairs, write down as many reasons as you can think of.
understand your motivation: to be a teacher, to teach a particular age group
know more about your relevant experience and what you've gained from it
check you can string a sentence together with no grammatical or spelling mistakes
find out what knowledge of teaching you have
see if you understand the realities of teaching and attributes needed
see if you can demonstrate commitment
Your ITT provider wants to:
find out about you - what skills and interests you have that could, for example, be applied to extra-curricular activities
Great for providing a framework to enable you to give a full but concise explanation in your personal statement
Time management
Team work
Sense of humour
Analytical mind
Ability to inspire
Think on your feet
Skills/attributes necessary for teaching...
What do you think these are?
Get all your ideas down - a mind map is a good way
find out why you think you'll be a good student
How can you evidence these?
Take each question at a time:

1. Who or what has influenced your choice to apply to be a teacher?
2. Why will you enjoy working with young people?
3. Why will you enjoy teaching your subject?
4. What did you learn about teaching through your experience in schools/
other educational environments?
5. What can you offer apart from your own specialist subject?
Simply identify how you think your degree study has prepared you to enter the teaching profession. How has the experience developed you as a person, socially and intellectually? How does this relate to the skills and qualities that you believe are important in a teacher?
Anyone want to try to articulate this now?
Some FAQs
Think about what do these say about you. Include ONLY if you can answer questions about how these have matured your outlook or will enhance your teaching ability. eg: sports coach/summer school tutor/amateur dramatics with children/musical activities: these may have direct relevance to your knowledge of the curriculum, your teaching skills and general management of young people, demonstrating you can manage your time, prioritise and contribute to wider teams.

What about part-time jobs or travelling?
If your part-time job has involved working with children or is of direct relevance to teaching them yes. If not, you'll still have been working on skills and qualities that will be beneficial as a student and as a teacher. Think about emphasising those specific skills eg. dealing with the public, working in a team.
Give examples of your ability to demonstrate that you can handle yourself in a professional workplace.
What does any travelling you've done say about you? Pull out only the most relevant features and explain how you feel they support your application. No need to go into detail, unless you've worked specifically with children, eg. via BUNAC etc.
The ultimate aim is to get you to an interview.
It is
most crucial part of your application form.
It will be used to assess your commitment to teaching, your desire for self-development and your enthusiasm about education.

Why you feel you'll make an outstanding teacher
Does your experience confirm that you know that teaching is for you?
What personal qualities and attributes do you have which show your active commitment to your own learning, and that of others?
How much do I need to talk about my degree?
What about my extra-curricular activities?
It's the content of the statement rather than the spelling and grammar that's important isn't it?
Some ITT providers will automatically discard applications that show that prospective students can't be bothered to proof read them. You are going to be a model for your pupils, so you MUST be proficient in spelling, grammar and punctuation yourself. First impressions are everything as far as this is concerned.
Have any typo's, punctuation or grammatical errors
Write a long list of 'I did this and then I did that...'
Overemphasise a wish to 'work with children'. This in itself is not sufficient.
Leave it to the very last minute...

Write fluently and structure your paragraphs
Make sure you evidence all your assertions
Ensure that something of YOU comes across
Get your statement proof read
Should it be written in the first person narrative, or can I just bullet point my answers?
It's generally expected that your personal statement should be written in the first person, and in an easy to read narrative style. You are displaying your written communication skills which will be key as a teacher.
Some reasons for rejection
No appropriate experience:
have age specific experience, eg. for primary early years, you must have some experience of Foundation and Key Stage 1.
No ability to reflect on what you've learned:
ITT training is
; they need to know that you are ready for it.
talk personally about your reasons for wanting to be a teacher: if you can't get this across in a personal statement then it's unlikely you will make a successful application.
Last thoughts
have you identified who they will be? Have you asked them?
This needs to be one of the first things you do.
Some applications are held up by referees not uploading their references to the UCAS website in time.
Principal Reference
: your current adviser or lecturer who knows you well - they need to give an indication of your probable degree grade
Secondary Reference
: ideally someone who has seen you in a school context where you've been observing / working - eg. head teacher, vice-principal, head of subject etc
Haven't gained relevant experience yet?
UEA say no point in applying until you have done this with exceptions for Science and Maths... Some applications may still be open in January, so worth contacting your ITT institution to double check, get experience in before Xmas. If you've arranged experience, mention it.

Writing a great teacher training application
and navigating UCAS.

Let's have a think about an example - evidencing a claim that you have an understanding of what it's like in a classroom environment
school / youth club where you have observed / helped out - what sort of school/ club? What age group?

what did YOU do? Or what was it that you observed someone else do that has made an impression?

what has happened as a result of what you did? Or what you saw someone else do? Eg. behaviour sorted (or not), main point of lesson got across (or not)

on reflection, what have you learned from this? eg. an understanding of how tough a classroom environment can be; power of listening to a child; difference between alternative styles of teaching etc etc
and grammar... and punctuation...
Expect to have to write 3 or 4 drafts, maybe more...
1. What's the point of the personal statement?
2. Look at the different sections and areas that you must address
3. Quick look at a technique to help
4. Brainstorm attributes
5. Major do's and don'ts
6. Last tips, questions and signpost to resources
Last tips
Keep it simple and natural in style - no jargon
Personalise it - 'me', 'I' and 'my'
Action verbs: co-ordinated, established, managed etc
Make sure each sentence contributes something useful. Cut the waffle!
Write it in word and double, triple check for spelling and grammatical errors. Allow time for any editing when you cut and paste into the application form
Print or save a copy of what you've written - you'll need to refer to it when at interview
Ensure it is ALL your own work
And don't forget...
Strong enthusiasm for Teach First and a commitment to their vision
Make links to their programme and how it will allow/enable you to make an impact in the classroom
An understanding of the ambassador movement and how you will have an impact beyond your 2 years, no matter what you do.

Humility, Respect & Empathy
Clearly detail the example of working with a group of people different from yourself. How were they different?
Exactly HOW did you work with them?
How did you adapt yourself in that situation?
How did you develop in that situation?

Problem Solving
Be able to describe a challenge you have faced.
Be very specific about the challenge itself. They are looking for your ability to weigh up the pros and cons of a situation.
What measures did you take to overcome these obstacles?
Use I, not We…
What were the results?
You must endeavour to show a really positive approach

Describe a position of responsibility you had, the skills you developed and how these will help you when you're a TeachFirst Teacher
Be very specific about the responsibility you held. This could be personal responsibility or responsibility for others.
Be very specific around the role and the tasks you personally undertook.
How will these relate to the role of a TeachFirst Teacher?
Talk about your achievements.
Show the use of your initiative.
What positive results came from these leadership skills?
Does it hang together well?
Does every sentence add something?
Has the writer made any generalised claims, or sweeping statements?
Have they repeated themselves?
Do they use positive language?
Do you get a good sense of who they are?
Have they explained their motivation sufficiently?
Have they got across what they've learned from their experiences?
Are there any typos or grammatical mistakes?

Mock interview support - bookable in advance - but generally when you know you've got an interview coming up. These have been extremely helpful to students in the very recent past and are recommended!

Apply 1 - Opens October 26th 2017
Apply 2 - Opens mid-November 2017
3 choices. Not ranked in terms of preference. Can be a mixture of provision, eg. 1 x HEI, 1 x Schools Direct, 1 x SCITT
You can change your mind and amend your choices right up to when your references are received by UCAS. Once you have applied, you can't change them.
Providers MUST let you know in 40 working days (eg. 8 weeks) if they are interested in offering you a place - unconditional or conditional, or not. You have 10 days to respond.
If you are unsuccessful with choices in Apply 1, or you have changed your mind
Do these one at a time, for as many providers as you wish until you are successful, or until Apply 2 closes in September 2018
40 days to let you know, 10 days for you to respond as before.
Advice from UCAS is to call the provider to double check they still have places before making your application.
Mandatory Skills tests
You MUST have submitted your application before taking the test. You don't have to have taken it before being interviewed or offered a place.
But you MUST have passed before you start your course.
First attempt is FREE. Subsequent attempts approx £20 each.
Ask in advance if you need special arrangements for eg. dyslexia, hearing or visual impairment etc.

All the info you need, plus practice tests.
General advice: popular courses (Primary, English, History, PE etc) will book up more quickly than sciences and MFL. Don't leave your applications too late, and if in doubt as to places on a course, call the provider.
