Chapter 4 Antidialogical Characteristics:

Freire emphasizes that a true revolutionary leader believes in working in unity with the oppressed. When we live in communion with each other, we liberate each other. Antidialogical & Dialogical Matrices in Cultural Action •The antidialogical individual aims to conquer others.
•In every act of conquest it requires a conqueror and someone/ something that is conquered.
•The ambition for conquest, (more like the necessity of conquest) is present all the time in antidialogical action. Conquest •Is an instrument of conquest

Antidialogical action lies in the oppressors abilities to conquer, invade, rule, and even manipulate
The oppressors "Leaders" despite their important, fundamental, and indispensable role, should not have the right to control people, they also do not have the right to guide them towards salvation.
"The Trust of the people in the leaders reflects the confidence of the leaders in the people" Freire Cooperation -Leaders must dedicate themselves for unity among
the oppressed and unity with the oppressed in order to achieve liberation.

Divide & rule Vs. Unity : The oppressors focus on fixed and dominant views rather than
looking at different measures of a problem.
Conquest Vs. Cooperation: Oppressors manipulate the oppressed to their will instead of
coming to an understanding.
Manipulate Vs. Organization: Oppressors instill the idea on the oppressed that you
have to live the American dream and strive for personal success.
Cultural Invasion Vs. Cultural Synthesis: Rather than teaching people to examine
the different view points of various cultures, the oppressors take away from
these cultures and instill how to act according to the oppressors. •A human being is not first antidialogical than an oppressor, but he or she is both. •In an objective situation of oppression, an antidialogue is necessary for the oppressor for further oppression. •It’s necessary for the oppressor to approach the people in order. This is accomplished by the oppressors’ depositing myths indispensable to the preservation of the status quo. Divide & Rule • As the oppressor minority subordinates and dominates the majority, it must
divide in order to remain in power.
• Concepts like unity, organizations, and struggle is automatically labeled
• The more alienated people are the easier it is to divide.
•One of the concepts that upset the oppressors is class conflict.They preach
the need for understanding and harmony between those who sell and buy labor.
•“Leadership training courses” are basically based on the naïve assumptions
that were the parts that promote the community by training its leaders.
•The only harmony which is viable and demonstrable is the one that is
only found among the oppressors.They only want to save their riches,
power and their way of life,
•In order to preserve the status quo you need to divide,
which is a fundamental objective of the theory of
antidialogical action. Cultural Invasion -Invaders penetrate the cultural context of another group and impose their
own view of the world upon those they invade and controls their expression-It’s an act of violence against the people of the invaded culture, who lose
their originality or face the threat of losing it -Cultural conquest leads to the cultural inauthenticity of those who are
invaded -They begin to respond to the values, the standards, and the goals of
the invaders -Cultural invasion is on the one hand an instrument of domination
and on the other, the result of domination -The object of dialogical action is to make it possible for the oppressed to make a choice to transform an unjust reality. -To achieve unity the revolutionary process must be cultural action. Organization -Organization is an educational process in which leaders + people = true authority & freedom, which then leads to seek establishment in society by transforming the reality that mediates them. -Leaders' pursuit of unity is an attempt to organize people, requiring witness to the fact that struggle for liberation has become a common task.
-Essential elements of witness: Consistency, Boldness, Radicalization, Courage to Love, & Faith. Cultural Synthesis -Social structure: in order to be, it must become.
-Cultural synthesis is a mode of action for confronting culture, as the preserver of the structures by which it was formed.
-In cultural synthesis, it is possible to resolve the contradiction between the view of the leaders and the people, to the enrichment of both.
-Leaders must indentify with the people's demands, while posing the meaning of that demand as a problem.
-"...just as the oppressor, in order to oppress, needs a theory of oppressive action, so the oppressed, in order to become free, also need a theory of action."
