Congress acts to authorize the US annexation of any small island that is unclaimed by other governments . 1856 1857 They annexed Jarvis Island and Bakeris Island, located in the mid-Pacific, and later Howardis Island. 1871 Bismark completes efforts to inify Prussia and the German kingdoms into a single nation and had king wilhelm proclaimed Kaiser. France forced to sign humiliating treaty with Germany that ends the 1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War. 1888 After his father's untimely death, 29 year old Wilhelm II becomes ruler, Kaiser WilhelmII, of Germany. 1894 Nicolas is crowned Tsar Nicolas II of Russia, a position he did not want. Germany and Russia do not renew a friendship treaty and begin their adversary relationship. 1901 Great Britain's Queen Victoria, whose bloodline runs through most of the ruling houses of Europe, dies. 1904-1905 Russian-Japanese War results in disastrous defeat for Russia and major civil unrest at home. "Bloody Sunday Massacre" by Tsarist troops in St. Petersburg left Russian workers dead and cost Nicholas support among the workers and farmers. 1906 British launch first "dreadnought" class battleship. 1914 Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia, and Russia. Germany declars war on Russia, France, Belgium, and Germany. 1915 War becomes "Total War" Allies between nations form. 1916 British conscription law goes into effect Woodrow Wilson re-elected President of the US with the slogan "He kept us out of the war" Many battles were fought this year. 1917 Germany again declares unrestricted submarine warfare. The US passes the Selective Service Act empowering the Federal Government to draft men for the armed forces. 1918 Two waves of influenza kill more people than did the war. President Woodrow Wilson declares his 14 points as the path to permanent world peace; begins to cooperate with allies. A german republic is founded. At eleven o'clock on the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, the war ends as Germany and Allies sign an Armistice. 1919 Peace Treaty signed by German delegates and Allies in Versailles. President Wilson brings his campaign for the ratification of the Treaty of Versailles and its League of Nations to the American people. (Link goes to PBS: American Experience) 1920-1922 War cemeteries created on the fronts; war memorials dedicated in villages and cities at home. 1920 The United States Senate fails to ratify the Treaty of Versailles and U.S. involvement in the League of Nations.
