The benefits of games in society
Impact on 'mainstream' application development - early games such as pong influenced the development of more graphical user interfaces. Original OS (operating systems) were just text based and difficult to operate. The user would be required to have good technical knowledge of computer in order to use it. Games inspired OS developers to develop more graphical interfaces allowing better, higher quality games to be created, as well as making the OS easier to use.

Negative impact of computer games on society
Education - Where as there are some benfits to education that games provide there are also some negatives as well. Some people ignore their school work and play games instead since it is more fun. Valuable time is spent playing games instead of doing homework. This leads to a negative effect on education by games.
The benefits of games in society
Hand-eye coordination - games can improve a persons hand-eye coordination through having to react quickly and press multiple buttons in quick succession without looking at the controller you are using.

Brain training - there are games that can train your brain i.e educational games. These games can teach you skills and help you improve yourself. They offer challenging but enjoyable task to the user. Brain training games offer immediate feedback to the user through scores making you want to improve your score. This makes the learning experience more enjoyable than the traditional classroom learning style.

The cost - the gaming industry is a multi-billion dollar industry and the cost of new games and technology is rising constantly. This makes it very expensive for gamers to keep up-to date with the latest software. The cost also includes electricity and internet costs which are required for gaming. Overall, the cost of gaming in general have a negative impact on a gamer.

Separation from reality - games are very attention grabbing and some people can become so engrossed in a game. This can lead to extreme behaviors in some cases where normally passive people can become violent when they are not playing games. Gamers can sometimes get so engrossed in a game that they prefer it to the real world and become addicted to games as a way of escape to the real world.
The benefits of games in society
Thinking and strategy skills - in some games strategic thinking is needed to do well. These games improve you logical and strategic way of thinking. You are often encouraged to think outside of the box in these games.

Future impact - Games are getting bigger and bigger. Now with virtual reality gaming there is a new and better way to play video games. With the rapid advances in technology in general, quicker ways to learn how to use these technology are needed. Game simulations offer the solution to this. You can play a simulator and become proficient in a highly advance technology.

Excess play time - there are many benefits to gaming but there are also some negatives to gaming as well. Spending too much time playing games can effect your sleep and therefor your education or your performance at work will be negatively affected.

Social isolation - another effect of playing games too much can be social isolation. This is where a gaming spends too much time playing games in their recreational time instead of socialising with real people. This can lead to communication problem and the person may not be able to communicate properly with others.

Computer games can have both a negative and positive affection individuals and society. There are many benefits of computer games such as improved hand eye coordination and thinking skills. However, there are also concerns and negatives of gaming such as social isolation and cost.

The psychological effects of a game on an individual can variate depending on the game and the person themselves. Players can have both positive and negative feeling when playing a game based on what the game is about and how it is designed.
Sound is used massively in computer games. The develops of games use sound to manipulate how you should feel at certain points in the game. Sound can be used to make the player think positively or negatively about how they performed in the game. Sound is also used to immerse the player in the game and help make the game's world seem a little more real and believable. Sound is used to teach the player when they are doing the right thing and when they are not in the game. Generally games use sound to directly influence how t they want the player to think and feel whilst playing the game.

High Score
Score and high score listing are used as a way to make a player feel superior and the best at a specific game. High score listing also encourage others to play the game more and get better at it so they can be the best and feel superior to others.
The use of scoring is essential for making a game competitive. The competitive and social nature of modern games today makes us want to improve our skill in the games we play so that we might seek approval from others. High scores listings and other score systems enable us to compare ourselves to others.
Competitive games
With the advance of new games and technologies competitive gaming been becoming bigger and bigger. Player can now compete against one another all over the world for large amounts of prize money. Friend online competitive competitions allow you to meet other players from all other the world and since most games require team work and communication you improve your skills in these areas. However, there are some negative psychological effects to competitive games. Some gamers can become aggressive to others when playing competitive games.
Peer Pressure
Peer pressure happens in gaming because of people compelling need to have the latest technology. Game consoles and games are often released around Christmas time when people are most likely to spend money. The pressure of having the latest console is put on gamers by their peers and the media. Game developer use clever advertising campaigns to pressure gamers of all ages to buy their game. Media is used to get into the mind of gamers which has psychological impact on gamers and drives them to want to buy the game developer's products and show them off o their peers.
Fun
Most gamers play for fun and use games as a way to escape reality. These gamers are know as casual gamers. They use games to become immersed in a world different to there own, sort of like a holiday or a break. Game designer keep in mind people's emotions when creating there games. One emotion game designers target to create in a gamer playing their game is the emotion of fun. The desire to have fun is the emotion that drives games and is what makes them popular to people.
Educational value
Research in to computer games shows that games help gamers increase their language, math, reading and social skills. Video games can help people with disabilities to learn basic skills such as socialising. They have been used to help people with attention deficit disorder to improve there thinking skills. The research show that where they maybe be negative effects of gaming but there are also many positives. The impact of games on society is only to get bigger and games will get used more and more for educational purposes as well. The impact of games on education can be very positive as time goes on.
Expectations
As games have become more technologically advance people's expectations of games have gotten higher. For example, with each release of FIFA gamers exceptions have risen to expect better graphics and AI with each release. The impact of this is a positive as it drive the game industry to make better more advanced games.
Leveling
Leveling up in a game is used by developers to keep player interested in their game. Leveling up presents a challenge to players and rewards them for their time spend playing the game. Leveling in games makes the player feel positive about themselves. It gives the player a sense of achievement and satisfaction.
Conclusion
To conclude, the psychological effect of games on individuals and society is overall positive if gaming is done in moderation. Gaming impacts us and society in how we think and feel both while playing games and in our daily lives. Research concludes that there are many positives to computer games and only a small amount of negatives. Gaming is has a positive psychological effect on us if done in moderation but can have a negative psychological effect if not done in moderation.
