Encouraging creativity among a team to motivate them. This style of leadership is used in the military services such as when the sergeants persuade their soldiers to keep going.
A direct style of leadership and uses rewards and punishments to motivate the team.
The most extreme style of leadership, where the leader has absolute power over his/her team. This type of leadership is used in all of the public services.
This leadership style is when the leader has the final say. He/she invites the other members to contribute to the final decision whilst in the process.
A transformational team leader would be a Sargent in the Military.
This team leader has all power over their team. In this situation a chief fire officer would be in charge and make the decisions over their peers.
This style of leadership is used in the Military, this is because if soldiers have done good service they would be rewarded with medals or awards such as the red cross and the iron cross.
Also giving punishments such as press ups or sit ups if the soldier had done something wrong, this motivates the team well as they will know not to do it next time.
The qualities that a Sargent would need would be courage, adaptability and decisiveness, this is because he/she must adapt to the situation they maybe in to motivate their soldiers to carry on. He/she must be decisive to have the power and to get the job done correctly.
The qualities they would need would be decisiveness, adaptability and courage. They would need to be decisive, as their in charge they have to make the best decision for the team and situation, they would need to have courage because if it was a raging fire they would have to have the bravery to put the fire out and control the team effectively this would also apply to adaptability
This style of leadership is used when the Public Services are on call, when the Fire Service are called to a fire incident.
This leadership type is used in the courts because the judge gives the final decision after the jury have had their opinions based on the evidence.
This Team leader would be a judge in the Magistrates.

Transactional leadership, also known as managerial leadership, focuses on the role of supervision, organization and group performance. This theory of leadership was first described in by sociologist Max Weber, and further explored by Bernard M. Bass in the early 1980s.
A Transactional Team leader would be a sergeant in the Military.
This team leader would be a sergeant in the Military to award their soldiers by doing good service.
Medals such as the Red cross.

The Qualities that this team leader would need would be compassion, as they would have to show emotion when giving medals to their soldiers bravery. They would also need to be adaptable to the situation that their soldier may have been in to get that bravery medal.

To give punishments the sergeant would need to have the qualities of decisiveness. This is because that sergeant must have to make the decision of the punishment and to have the power to give the punishment.
The qualities that the judge would need would be decisiveness and adaptability. This is because they must have the power to make the final decision of the case. They would take in the jury's comments and opinion on the verdict and then take the power to make the decision.

The reason the judge would need adaptability would be because he/she would have to adapt to the situation that the case would be on. They would also need to adapt as it would give him the decision that is needed for the verdict.

Leadership and Teamwork within the public services is very important.
This is because you must work with your fellow colleagues in serious cases and deal with important situations.
There are many leadership styles that are used in the public services, however these are the 4 we will be talking about in our presentation:
The Roles and Responsibilities
When using each leadership style, there are many skills and qualities that the leader will need to make sure the team will listen and that they get the outcome they wanted of the task at hand.
Those skills are:
The roles and responsibilities of a team leader is that they have to motivate, encourage participation and give instruction to their team.
Those qualities are:
Decisiveness is having the power to make the final decision.
This can be important in the public services because if youi have confidence within your team and yourself you can be less likely the focus on mistakes. This means you can mov e on quickly and it can make the whole process alot quicker and smoother.

Adaptability is to be capable of adapting a thought or your self-according situations you are placed in.
This quality is important to use in the public services, because you must adapt to the task at hand, as you have to make a plan to get the outcome you would like from the situation.
Courage is being able to show bravery according to the situation that occurs in everyday life.
You must use the quality of courage in the public services, as you must have the bravery to face horrific situations and accidents. You must also have to make first attempts and accepting the fact you may make mistakes along the way.
Compassion is the ability to show empathy for something or someone.
This quality is important because it allows the leader to be able to exchange in communication with their team and interact with others.
It also allows to manage their moods setting aside any negative feelings.
Communication is the ability to communicate with peers this can be shown by writing, speaking and listening.
This skill can be important in the public services, because you must be able to communicate with your team, so you can get everyone involved and therefore you can listen to everyone else's ideas and opinions.
Organization is being able to organize your time effectively using different techniques.
You must have the organizational skills in the public services, as this helps create plans and it also helps if you put people into groups to do a certain thing and it will get the task done quicker.
Multi-tasking is being able to carry out more than one specific task at once at a chosen time.
This skill is important to use in the public services, because it gets the task done faster. For example if you have a deadline to finish a task or case, you must use this skill to do more than one thing at a time to get it done quicker and smoother.
Planning is the ability to plan a method in which order you're going to be completing an objective.
Planning is an important skill to use in the public services, this is because you must make ideas and plan a task for the situation. This way it gets everyone involved and the job gets done.
Motivating is providing a good incentive on others around you to encourage them to do something they may not want to do.
This Skill is very important, because you have to motivate your team members to get involved in the task/situation. This also means you must support them, so they know they can do it, this helps them as well as getting the outcome you wanted.
Authoritarian vs Democratic
We feel that Authoritarian and Democratic leadership are similar as the leader has the power to have the final decision to the situation that the team may be in.
However depending on what the task is at hand, they can both have a positive outcome. Such as if there was a emergency situation and needed immediate services the team leader would use the authoritarian style, this is because he/she would have to have all the power over their team to control the situation and to get the outcome they wanted, done quickly.
But in other situations where discussion is needed within the group, democratic leadership would be used. This can be such as a court room when a judge would need the jury's opinion and comments on the verdict given to the criminal.
Transformational vs Transactional
These two leadership are also very similar to each other as they use different persuasive skills to motivate their team.
For example, Transformational leadership uses motivational skills by talking to the team and persuade them to participate in the task.
However Transactional leadership uses rewards and punishment for good behavior and good teamwork. This style could be used in Police Force, when a inspector does a high standard of his/her job. He/she could get promoted, this can motivate them to get a positive outcome of the job.
Components of Transformational Leadership
– These leaders encourage creativity among followers. The leader encourages followers to explore new ways of doing things and new opportunities to learn.
– Transformational leadership also involves offering support and encouragement to individual followers. To show supportive encouragement relationships, the leaders keep lines of communication open so that followers feel free to share ideas.
– Transformational leaders have a clear vision that they are able to articulate to followers. These leaders are able to help followers experience the same passion and motivation to fulfill these goals.
– This leader serve as a role model for followers. Because followers trust and respect the leader, they emulate this individual and internalize his or her ideals.

In my own opinion I find that the most effective leadership styles would be Transformational and Transactional.
The reason that I find that these are the two most effective leadership styles would be because, they both motivate their team.
With transactional leadership, it is very successful because you are rewarding your team members with awards, this helps them motivate and participate in the actual task at hand. It also gets everyone involved, but not only does it get the team involved but it also gets the leader involved as well, instead he/she lying back and doing nothing. The situation that this would be effective in would be motivating the team as this can work more efficiently and carry out the task at hand without fail. It also helps giving the team members punishments as it lets them know that they have to improve the next time they do the same task or in the same situation.
With Transformational leadership, it can be successful but in my own opinion I don’t think it would be as successful as Transactional Leadership. This is because with transactional, the team members are working towards something that they want. However with Transformational, they are being supported by their leader and also working towards an outcome not a reward.
The public service I would say they would be most effective in would be Police Raids. This is because the team leader would have to motivate his squad to the job correctly and enter the building in the right manner. Another public service that these styles would be successful in, would be the Military. This is because when you have finished your service in the Army, you would get awarded a medal, this is effective as the soldiers would be working towards that. However if you were going to be punished because you made a mistake, the sergeant would make you do press ups or some sort of exercise. With the other style you would be motivated by your leader e.g. shouting at you to keep going.

I feel that transactional leadership is the most effective leadership style.
I feel that transactional leadership is the best and most successful way of leadership because the leader uses rewards to motivate his/ her team when they do the job well. But if the team does something wrong the leader also gives punishments.
Both rewards and punishments motivate the team because they will be wanting to get the rewards and not the punishments. I feel that this leadership style would get the job done better because the team is better motivated and may get rewards at the end.
The public service I feel uses this leadership style is the Army. The soldiers gain medals for doing good service in the Army. There are a number of medals any one soldier can get such as the Victoria Cross and the Iron Cross. Promotion is also a good reward of hard work. As one of the punishments for the Military is demotion and Military Prison.
Another style i find is effective is Democratic leadership, because the leader always has the final say, however they take in opinions and ideas from their team members. This is effective because everyone is included and gets their say in the matter, but at the end of the task, the leader has the authority over everyone.
The public service that this leadership style can be used in would the Magistrate courts, because the judge would listen to the jury at the opinions on what charge should be give. But the judge has the power to give the sentence over everyone. This shows that he/she has the high authority over the jury and makes the final decision.

Authoritarian leaders are effective in some areas of leadership but not so in others for example theirs only one outcome and that is the leaders, it could be either great or not work so on one hand the leader can learn how to make it work for next time but on the other hand if they get it correct its shows their authority over the group so this can create friendships, bonds and trusts between colleges for example soldiers and their Lieutenant, fire-fighters and scene examiners too create the best plan of what to do but on the other hand it can also demotivate your co-workers because they may get annoyed with your style of leadership and they may not want to participate with the task at hand and will not contribute to the team effort to achieve your chosen goal.
The Authoritarian style is effective because its shows that you are in command, you show your Authority and power over your peers. The style is also effective because the style really suits all of the public services for example in the Police if you’re planning a drugs raid and your gathering and getting all your information and when delivering all of this information you could make your team perform better in the situation that you put into. On the other hand you can use Authoritarian Leadership styles when getting evidence for a murder crime scene investigation you would be straight to the point, so your peers would know what to do so they would respect you for your decisions if they are correct and if your decisions were wrong you and your team can easily learn from where you went wrong and see where you can improve for next time.
In particular situations for example in the military whilst explaining an action plan for carrying out a mission for example carrying out a rescue operation to save an expected prisoner of war or carrying out a raid on expected enemy positions this is affective in this certain situation because it shows their authority over the men so they person in charge could gain a lot of respect from his peers, it makes your mission statement and plan of action is more understandable and easy to get your points across because your voice may change due to the situation. It can motivate the men so they perform better in the situation their put in and also raise the moral of the troops so they are more affective in fighting and all other aspects of being an affective soldier.
