Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
leukemia is a disease of the white blood cells
ALL mainly affects children
affects "blasts"
acute, progresses rapidly
very treatable
98% of children will go into remission after weeks of treatment
the younger you are when you get it, the better survival rate you have
DNA Change
deletions, translocations, inversions
Oncogenes and Tumor Supressor Genes
oncogenes help cells live longer and divide
tumor supressor genes control when cells die and control division
These genes matter because if they are affected by a DNA change, the cell would not die and keep dividing because there is nothing controlling it.
mostly treated by chemotherapy
injected into the spinal cord to prevent spread to the central nervous system
may be some radiation to the spinal chord
