By: Edgar Allan Poe Theme: The main idea or meaning of the story, and provides a unifying point on how the elements are set up. Argument: Edgar Allan Poe's theme revolves around the concept of death, in "The Masque of the Red Death" and that brings out the emotion of his work. Edgar Allan Poe In this story, Prince Prospero guests accompany him from a disease known as the Red Death. Not only did he decide to lock the gates of his castle, later on he throws a fancy masquerade ball in order to be protected from the Red Death plague. This horrific masked figure enters the castle and goes to the black room; and kills anyone who dared enter the room. However as soon as Prince Prospero confronts the figure he dies. Author's Background Literary Criticism Summary Short Story/Term The theme of death is conveyed in this story because everyone dies at the end unexpectedly. The "The Red Death held illimitable dominion over all." This quote shows in the end death controls and wins overall. The Larger Picture Poe's best known fiction works are Gothic, a genre that satisfies his readers in a ghastly way. When he was young, his father abandoned the family; shortly after his mother passed away from tuberculosis. Later on he married his cousin Virginia, who also had the same disease and passed away as well. This has affected him and often reflected his writing career, which led to an eerie, dark mood in his stories. Real World Connection Every single day people die due to accidents, suicide, murder, old age, etc. This shows nothing can prevent death from causing it to happen. Poe's other short stories Examples: In "The Cask of Amontillado" Fortunato is chained to a stone behind a wall, and spends rest of his life inevitably dying. Death is an emphatically recurring theme in Poe's work. Edgar Allan Poe develops the idea that no one can escape death.
Poe's imagination was vivid as well as macabre. "Nothing more than another of Poe's numerous explorations of the general theme of death." What does this mean? This shows throughout all of his stories, it has a macabre mood to it, not only it does lead to death. This proves other people do see his theme relating to death. H.H Bell Jr.
