What is the Iliad?
Iliad is a word that means "a poem about Ilium" (i.e Troy)
So,what's "The Iliad" all about?
The Iliad is an epic poem depicting the possible war between the Trojans and the Spartans and Acheans--name given to mainland Greeks--supposedly the Trojan war took place c. 1200
Spartans\Acheans (Greeks)
King Menelaus, King of Lacedaemon(Sparta) + wife Helen
Achilles--one of the Greeks' greatest warriors
Homer's great epic poem has been known as 'The Iliad" ever since the Greek historian,Herodotus, coined it this.
Agamemnon, brother of Menelaus,Supreme Commander of Acheans\King of Mycenae
Paris, son of Priam and abductor of Helen,Menelaus'wife
Hector, brother of Paris and son of Priam
Paris, son of Priam of Troy, was asked to pick which goddess was most beautiful:
How did the Trojan war begin?
Hera offered Paris the entire Asia Kingdom if he choose her.
Athena offered him infinite wisdom.
Aphrodite offered Paris the beautiful Helen,King Menelaus' wife from Sparta.
Who do you think he chose as the most beautiful based upon the rewards?
Hmm....let me see.Power, wisdom or beauty?????? Ahh! I've got it!
Yup! He chose beauty. He wanted Helen for himself, thus angering Hera and Athena. This fateful decision is the reason that Hera and Athena favor Sparta over the Trojans in the war. Also,it's why Aphrodite favors the Trojans.
Can you guess who else this angered?
Right! The King of Sparta ,Menelaus.
I want my wife back!!
Guess what? This all happened ten years before the Trojan war.
Homer's The Iliad begins nine years after the start of the war with the Trojans.During that nine years virtually nothing happens. Then Achilles refuses to fight after being insulted by Agamemnon.Achilles is badly tempered and flawed eventhough the best warrior the Greeks have.
Without Achilles, the Acheans (Greeks) begin to lose many men.
Patroclus,Achilles'bff appeals to him to rejoin the war.
Achilles, please reenter the war. We've lost so many men.Asyour bff I plead with you.
Achilles still refuses but he does give Patroclus his bronze armor made by Hephaestus to protect him against the Trojans.
Too bad,so sad. Hector of Troy slays Patroclus even with Achilles' protective armor.
Achilles rage is now directed at Hector.
Achilles gets new armor again from Hephaestus. He goes on rampage killing many Trojans until he faces Hector, killer of his bff.
Hector knows he doesn't stand a chance against Achilles for the Gods had told him so.He takes off with Achilles at his heels.Achilles chases him around the walls of Troy three times until, tricked by Athena,Hector turns to face Achilles.
After Hector has been slain,Achilles ties up his body to the back of his chariot and drags him around the town wall. Priam,Hector's father is enraged and saddened.
After the funeral for Patroclus,Achilles is visited by Priam.
Priam offers money for his son's body.Moved by Priam's saddness and the knowledge that he probably won't see his father again either,Achilles relinquishes the body of Hector to Priam.
Priam pleading for his son's body from Achilles.
The epic ends with this line,
"And so the Trojans buried Hector breaker of horses"
