Yellow River Time Period The Shang Dynasty was from 1600 BC to about 1100 BC

Emerged as a civilization in about 1600 BC .

The Shang Dynasty was at their Peak during the ruling of King Wuding (at an unknown time period).

The Shang Dynasty, as a civilization, had lasted for about 500-590 years. -The serfs and slaves performed all economic functions of society

-Main income came from farming or the harvest of crops

-Many farmers also knew how to cultivate the silkworm and weave its tread into beautiful cloth which would be used for clothing

-Silk later became China’s main export

-The artisans formed another group of the economic structure

-Many artisans manufactured weapons, ritual vessels, jewelry, and other items of interest Beliefs Contributions The Shang Dynasty was a major contribution to China:

-They had used pottery that has lasted a long time and is still seen today.

-The Shang Dynasty had left us art, an improved writing system, and oracle bones Writing Slavery The second Chinese ancient slave society was a byproduct of the Shang Dynasty.

During this time, the slave system was very tyrannical and included such rituals as the Sacrifice System of Killing People, which were practiced in the middle period of the dynasty.

This practice eventually led to the fall of the Shang Dynasty. Rise and Fall -The Shang Dynasty was established in 1675 BC by King Tang after he toppled the tyrannical rule of Jie, the last emperor of the Xia Dynasty.

-Because of the slavery killings the Shang Dynasty saw its end. During the final period, the people could no longer bear such a fierce and cruel system and this, on top of the despotic rule of the Emperor Zhou's rule, caused uprisings to break out across the dynasty.

-The dynasty was finally overthrown by Emperor Wu, the chief of Zhou tribes living in the western part of the Shang Dynasty. GOLDEN AGE -Shang Dynasty had a Golden Age.

-One of the capitals was possibly at what is now Zhengzhou, where there are rich archaeological finds. The Arts/Architecture Their art played a role in Primitive art of China.

We can learn about their religion from their art. -The Shang Dynasty had worshipped their ancestors and had burial offerings.

-They believed that the highest god was Di or Shangdi who were especially responsible for natural powers.

-They were polytheistic and their religion and government were not combined.

-The Shang Dynasty had believed in life after death which can be proven from the tombs that they had created. -Used communication by writing

-Wrote on bamboo strips that are very thin. For this reason, the characters are written vertically rather than horizontally.

-Shang Dynasty’s writing was pictograph. We couldn’t be able to read it today. It developed on a writing system in China.

-Other civilizations did use their writing. - Located in central and northern China on what is now called Tangshan.

`-The Shang Dynasty had strong culture and beliefs in the time that they were around. They believed in many gods and spirits who were especially responsible for natural natural powers so the Shang Dynasty used their slaves as burial offerings.

-The Shang Dynasty had contributed to many civilizations, China, and the world.
