What is Culture?
How does culture change?
Cultural diffusion- the spread of cultural traits, material and non-material, from one culture to another.
Language allows people to communicate information and experiences and pass cultural values and traditions.

Ex: how many words for snow are there?
Versions of language are called
dialect
(there are variations in pronunciation and the meaning of words).

Ex: southern drawl, street slang

Language helps establish a cultural identity.
How is language diffused?
A group of people who shares a
common
ancestry, language, religion, customs, or place of origin.
The way of life of a group of people who share similar culture traits, including beliefs, customs, technology, and material items.
An ethnic group has an identity as a separate group of people within a region where they live.

Ex: Latinos living in the U.S.
What ethnic groups are found in the U.S.?
Technology
Technology is any resource or product which meets a need.

Innovation
happens when we take existing technology & resources to create something new.
Religion
& Beliefs

Religions are categorized as:
mono
theistic,
poly
theistic, animistic.
Major Religions: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism.
Economic
Activity

Art
& Music

Religion consist of a belief in a supernatural power or powers that are regarded as the creators and maintainers of the universe.
What are beliefs?
How do religions spread?
What percentage of the world's population...
How do these categories differ?
Government maintains order within a country, provides protection from outside dangers, and supplies other services to its people.

totalitarian/autocracy
oligarchy
theocracy
Norms- acceptable behaviors in society.
Society- a group that shares a geographic region, a sense of identity, and a culture.
The way people

What are some examples of norms?
Economies operate on a local, national, and international level.

How does a command economy differ from a market economy?
A culture's way of expressing itself.

Oral & Written-

Art reflects the attitudes and behaviors of the group.
Music is found in all societies.
What are some examples of art & music?
Cultural hearth- a center where cultures developed and from which ideas and traditions spread outward.

What is the difference between ethnicity and race?
What are some examples of dialect?

Gov't is organized according to level of power and type of authority.
How a culture utilizes its natural resources to meet needs such as food and shelter.
