1920's Reckless Art
Recklessness in Gatsby
The theme of recklessness is displayed throughout the novel,
The Great Gatsby
. The wealthy people, such as the Buchanans, were the most guilty of this behavior. Nick makes the comment about them that, "They were careless people, Tom and Daisy -- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made" (Fitzgerald 188). This shows that even Nick was able to notice the reckless behavior of the wealthy people in the 1920's, which continues still with the wealthy today.

1920's Reckless Music
This artifact represents
recklessness in
The Great Gatsby
because this is how most women at Gatsby's parties as well as Daisy acted. It also shows how women dressed inappropriately. This is the first time that women started to wear short skirts. People listened to this music at parties where drinking and other reckless behavior took place.

This video represent reckless behavior in
2014. It shows people with money
spending it recklessly. It shows how the
people in the video don’t really care about
how they're wasting money, but they're
more focused on having a good time.
This relates the
The Great Gatsby
because
that’s how Tom, Daisy, and Gatsby live.
In the movie the Fast and Furious and the 1920’s racing movie recklessness is displayed because it shows people illegally racing and recklessly driving. The two characters Brian and Dom in the fast and furious are vigorously racing down the street just like in the racing moving from the twenties. The man in the that movie is driving in a car without any protection or anything going at high speeds. This relates to the Great Gatsby and the topic of Recklessness because it depicts the way that they were racing in the movie and how they took no consideration of other people around them. Carelessness while driving is also shown when Jordan Baker says, "They'll keep out of my way,' she insisted. 'It takes two to make an accident.'"(Fitzgerald 59). This shows that the wealthy were truly reckless and relied on other people to do the right thing instead of doing the right thing themselves.
This advertisement represents how
reckless smoking is. It shows how
smoking leads to poor decisions. In
The Great Gatsby smoking and
drinking take place often. We see it
many times at Gatsby's parties.
This advertisement represents recklessness
behavior in the 1920s. It shows how doctors
promote smoking. This is reckless because
they are promoting a product that can kill
you. In The Great Gatsby they smoke a lot
and probably believe it was good for them.
Celebrities have and still act reckless to this day.
In the 1920's, celebrities were beginning to always
be at parties and were involved with smoking and
drinking. Most celebrity women were always seen
in a short dress with a cigarette in between their
fingers. In
The Great Gatsby
, Jordan Baker is a
famous golfer of the time. She often attended Gatsby's parties where there were other celebrities as well. Jordan Baker represents the celebrities of the 1920's who like to party and even says, “I like large parties. They’re so intimate. At small parties there isn’t any privacy”(Fitzgerald 49).
Celebrities today have become much more reckless.
Celebrities have gone from partying in their private
lives to partying on camera for the media. Songs today
contain lyrics about drugs, alcohol, and other explicit
material. Miley Cyrus is just one example of a modern reckless celebrity. She has made songs and videos which contain explicit content. The modern partying of celebrities has developed greatly from the parties portrayed in
The Great Gatsby
. Parties are much more public and are shown in the media everyday.

Several characters in
The Great Gatsby
display behaviors and actions of recklessness, but the character whom is most reckless is Daisy. Daisy believes that a girl should act as "a beautiful little fool" (Fitzgerald 21), which is how Daisy acts herself. Daisy's affair with Gatsby is also reckless. While her husband Tom is in the other room, Daisy approaches Gatsby and then, "She got up and went over to Gatsby and pulled his face down, kissing him on the mouth" (Fitzgerald 116). This shows how little Daisy cares about consequences or about how her husband would feel if he saw what she did. Daisy causes conflict between Gatsby and Tom, but then just ignores the situation to let someone else clean up her mess.
