Virtual Reality Therapy
Transcript of Virtual Reality Therapy
The University of Southern California and Emory University.
Each of these organizations use specialized software to guide patients through familiar trauma scenes in hopes of curing their patients. After completing several sessions of Virtual Reality Therapy, many patients gain positive attributes such as: Greater control over their personal situations, are able to express emotions positively, improved self-esteem, and able to have better relationships with the people around them.
Although not every patient responds the same, many individuals come out of therapy healthier than before they went in. This therapy is escpecially targeted at veterans with Post Traumatic Stress (PTSD) The patient is given a head-mounted display device (sound proof) to wear and a game controller for participation. A scent machine is also used to reenact the environment These images vary from being secluded in foreign places to reliving the sounds of gunfire and the killing of their allies and foes. The psychologist creates images to the specific need of the patient. It is estimated that 1 in 5 soldiers returning home from war will experience mental health problems. These traumatic experiences from war causes the individual to have reoccurring flashbacks and nightmares, which eventually lead to anger and emotional numbness.
