Bullying
On Social Media and In and Out of School

A letter stating of how Carlos was a failure to the human race. He posted this to twitter and then killed himself from being bullied at school and on twitter.
After Carlos was in the hospital and on life support he was taken off a day later. His classmates were at the hospital that day to support him. After he was taken off life support his mother tweeted off his account.
Avondale Twitter
Someone in at Avondale high school made a twitter account called "Expose."
Most bullying and fights come from "subtweeting." Subtweeting gives the power for someone to bully someone but being able to say it was not about them because their name isn't really in it. Subtweeting also allows people to feel like they have power over the other person.
Indirectly tweeting something about someone without mentioning their name. Even though their name is not mentioned, it is clear who the person tweeting is referring to.
Bullying is a problem because its a cause of metal health issues, causes teen suicide and effects more then one person. Bullying has a long term effect on everyone. It brings depression, lowers self esteem, studies have shown that it brings their mental health down. Bullying needs to stop for the fear of increasing numbers in teen suicide.
Bullies start bullying for a number of issues. Institutional, social, family, personal history, having power and provocative victims can all be reasons bullies bully. For example with social bullying, "Jealousy or envy and a lack of personal and social skills to deal with such feelings can also be reasons why people bully" ("Why Do People Bully?" - Bullying Statistics. N.p., 2013. Web. 24 Nov. 2013).
Causes
Impact
Bullying gives long term effects on kids. Researcher William Copeland said, "'To my surprise at least, there were some very strong long-term effects on their risk for depression, anxiety, suicidality, a whole host of outcomes that we know just wreak havoc on adult lives,'" (Samakow, Jessica. "Long-Term Effects Of Bullying: Pain Lasts Into Adulthood (STUDY)." The Huffington Post. TheHuffingtonPost.com, 20 Feb. 2013. Web. 25 Nov. 2013.) Bullying will always be a long term effect. Bullying sicks with kids for years. It will effected their future job, family and social life.
Carlos
This is a subtweet.
What is a Subtweet?
In Jill Reilly's article about Carlos she said that Carlos stated, "Carlos claimed his fellow students called him gay slurs and he apologized for 'Not being a person that would make someone proud'"("'The Kids in School Are Right, I Am a Loser, a Freak and a Fag and in No Way Is That Acceptable': Heartbreaking Online Letter Bullied Teen Wrote before He Killed Himself." Mail Online. N.p., 16 July 2013. Web. 25 Nov. 2013.) These kids bullying Carlos to his death gave a longer term effect on his family. The bullying of Carlos will surpass his death.
The tweets above show how teens bully on social media. Tweeting off an account that was made up makes it easy for people to bully without personally getting involved. Hiding behind an account that does not have their name on it shows that they are just trying to cause trouble without wanting to do it in person. A fake account can also allow the people doing the bullying to see the affects and reactions of the people they are bullying.
Have you ever been bullied?
Have you ever bullied someone else?
Do you think social media has an effect on bullying?
Do you think bullying though socail media is a cause of teen suicide?
Do you think when a person is bullied they are bullied by groups more often than one person doing the bullying?
Have you ever stood up for someone getting bullied?
Is there a bullying problem in school?
Have you ever watched and not said anything when someone is bullied?
Do you know of anyone that does not come to school because they are bullied?
Question number 10 on my survey was, What do you think is the most "popular" place to be bullied?
The answers I got were:
Facebook
Hallways
Twitter
Behind a computer screen
Recess
ALL social media
bathroom
School in general
Gossip
Locker room showers
"The kids in school are right, I am a loser, a freak, and a fag and in no way is that acceptable for people to deal with. I'm sorry for not being a person that would make someone proud."
Kids know no other way to cope with bullying. They always take it out on themselves thinking that there is always something wrong with them. Bully OnLine states, "Society, parents and schools do not teach children the skills of physical, psychological, emotional and verbal self-defence. This is because most adults don't know how to do this" ("Myths and Misperceptions about School BullyingOvercoming Stereotypes and False Perceptions of School Bullyingand Child BullyingSee Also Myths, Misperceptions and Stereotypes of Adult Bullying and Workplace Bullying." Myths about Child Bullying, School Bullying, School Phobia, No Blame Etc. N.p., n.d. Web. 25 Nov. 2013.)
"Le Monde En Face : Harcèlement à L'école - France 5 (BA)." YouTube. YouTube, 18 Oct. 2013. Web. 25 Nov. 2013.
In this video clip you can see that bullying doesn't just happen at school but also in the work place. You can also see that bullying can take emotional and physical tolls on people.
Bullying in the work place hurts more then the workers. It also hurts the company. In an article from USA Today it states, "Hostile workplaces often lead to less productive employees and therefore less successful companies" (Lebowitz, Shana. "What's behind a Rise in Workplace Bullying?" USA Today. Gannett, 8 Oct. 2013. Web. 25 Nov. 2013).
Bullying in the workplace is harmful to anyone's heath. In the video it showed examples of physical and mental. They showed physical when the beat him up and mental when they tease and make dirty remakes to the picture of his daughter. "Many people say the experience of being bullied has caused them to develop health issues such as anxiety and depression. Some have even left their jobs" (Lebowitz, Shana. "What's behind a Rise in Workplace Bullying?" USA Today. Gannett, 8 Oct. 2013. Web. 25 Nov. 2013).
I took a survey of 25 different people with the questions of bullying. what shocked me the most was question number three, "Do you think social media has an effect on bullying?"
"Back to School, Social Media and Bullying - Tisha Lewis Fox Chicago 2013." YouTube. YouTube, 12 Oct. 2013. Web. 25 Nov. 2013.
This video shows that schools know about the bullying programs and have been taking steps to fix it.
Anti-Bullying Programs DON'T WORK!
Whenever there is a bullying problem the first thing we think to do to fix the problem is an anti-bullying program. In fact anti-bullying programs tend to make it worse. A study done by Seokjin Jeong says, "“The schools with interventions say, ‘You shouldn’t do this,’ or ‘you shouldn’t do that.’ But through the programs, the students become highly exposed to what a bully is and they know what to do or say when questioned by parents or teachers,” Jeong said," (Jeong, Seokjin. "University of Texas Arlington." Youth More Likely to Be Bullied at Schools with Anti-bullying Programs, UT Arlington Researcher Finds. University of Texas, 12 Sept. 2013. Web. 25 Nov. 2013).
A way to stop is to fight back, but not fighting back in a physical way but to kill them with kindness.
This video talks about a high school girl that gets bullied and fights back. Her mom set up a Facebook page about bullying. The student body that was behind her set up a green out day at the high school football game and wearing shirts that say "I'm With Shea." When the student body fought back without the real physical fight but verbal helped her blow off all the bad things said about her. During the interview Shea states, "You may not be watching this TV show or you may be staring at me or at school and thinking well she’s not pretty or she’s not popular so were going to dislike her were going put her unpopular kid group. Well that’s alright. That’s alright" (Bullied Texas Teen Fights Back 'I'm With Shea' Shawhan Mike Huckabee Fox News 10 26 13." YouTube. YouTube, 20 Nov. 2013. Web. 25 Nov. 2013."). This just shows that having people that stand up with you can make all the bad words be shaken off.
