A Dream Deferred Langston Hughes
(1902-1967) Gathering of thoughts..
One of the leaders of the early 1900's Harlem renaissance, Let's take a look at the word defer;
it means to put off or to delay.
The fact that it says what
happens to a dream
deferred suggests that
they are out of reach, or
that they sit around
and idol. Raisins come from grapes. Too
become raisins they must first go
through dehydration,
sucking the life form that
all organisms need. Water.
Now thirsty. The dream
seems sweeter just like a
raisin in the sun.
-Sun represents age..the older
we get does it get sweeter?
-Water equals hope What a piece of imagery.
It gives the reader the
feeling of a dream that is
waiting to be noticed/
realized. It will not be
ignored.
-Fester= Linger The rotting meat, similar to the
sore, stinks. What do people do
with rotting meat? we throw it
away. it is no longer practical to
keep something that is of no use
to us and does nothing but
infest every thing else in a persons
"refrigerator" yet we have to eat. So we get
new "meat" Crust is like a housing that
keeps the dream safe. The
term sugar over insinuates
that this "dream deferred"
is not cast away or sad/
hopeless or dreary. The
dream inflates and deflates
but will not remain constant. This short poem is deceiving at first glance. Yet
this hasty poem hit's like 808's in a good song.
It makes the reader ponder about their own
"Deferred Dreams" The underlying question
erupts in the mind of the reader and entices
deferred dreams back to life. What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode? What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
