acoustics & BIM
Transcript of acoustics & BIM
Improve design efficiency (reduce costs)
Improve coordination with other disciplines
Access design information more easily
Automate the design process
What is BIM?
"Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a process involving the generation and management of digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of places. Building Information Models (BIMs) are files which can be exchanged or networked to support decision-making about a place."
What's that got to do with acoustics?
May 2011: UK Government Chief Construction Adviser calls for BIM adoption on UK government construction projects of £5+million, telling construction professionals to
adopt BIM or be "Betamaxed out".
June 2011: UK government announced its intention to require collaborative 3D BIM (with all project and asset information, documentation and data being electronic) on its projects
so what do we need to do?
Learn the language of BIM and talk it to our clients
Be seen as early adopters, leading the acoustics industry
Embrace the change
where do we start?
Learn the language:
Level 1, 2, 3
Learn the software:
navigate a model
locate important data (e.g. ceiling heights, floor finishes)
add your own information
assign absorption quantities to rooms
design a building from scratch
Build up the acoustics template job-by-job
Southmead Hospital Pathology Department
West Dunbartonshire Care Homes
Identify your own!

WHERE COULD WE
BE IN THE FUTURE?
Intelligent SI calcs
Intelligent duct calcs
Integration with Cadna/Odeon
Yeah right! Hahaha!
RUK Acoustics Revit template could be packaged up as Revit plugin?
