WHY IS CARBON IMPORTANT?
THE CARBON CYCLE
All living things are
made of carbon!!!
a dog is made of carbon
An insect is made of carbon
Fish are made of carbon
plants are made of carbon
Carbon is found in things that
are non-living as well
like the ocean
or the atmosphere
and even rocks
Carbon is found in
so many places that
looking at all the ways
carbon transfers occur can make you crazy
that sure looked complicated
DON'T PANIC!!!!! It's easy when
you take baby steps.
Photosynthesis is
one part of the carbon
cycle
what can you tell me
about photosynthesis
by looking at this picture?
What enters the plant during photosynthesis?
what leaves the plant?
What else do you think
is need for photosynthesis
to occur?
Here's another way to look at the diagram
Are you starting to understand
photosynthesis? What do you need for photosynthesis to occur?
energy from the sun
water
carbon dioxide
water
What is produced?
which the plant uses for energy
and oxygen
I think you are ready
for the photosynthesis equation
Don't worry, you're ready
Let's break this down one small step at a time
6 molecules of
carbon dioxide
+
Let's put it all together in one final video
Since we now know that sugars are found in both plants and animals
we can move to the next part of the
carbon cycle.

CONSUMPTION
When an animal consumes (eats)
a plant, the sugar in the plant is
passed on to the animal
When an animal consumes a
plant, the sugar is transferred
to them. Since sugar contains
carbon, the carbon is continuing
its journey through the carbon
cycle
This carbon continues
to transfer through the process of consumption as it moves up the food chain
Lets end this with the
consumption song

As we have learned, some
organsims are consumed by
other organisms. But organisms
can also simply die of disease or
old age
What do you think
happens to the carbon
of the decaying organism?
To find out the answer,
we need to look at another
process of the carbon cycle
DECOMPOSITION
When an organism dies,
the carbon stored in their
body goes into the soil and provides nutrients to
the plants.
Bad for mouse
Good for plant

Don't forget all
living things contain
carbon.
What if we take our
dead things and burn
them?
Now we have another
process of the carbon cycle
COMBUSTION!!!
The carbon stored
in the item moves
to the atmosphere.
combustion
fire is bad
fire
Fire burns
sugar
oxygen
carbon dioxide
water
Now that you know
about photosynthsis
this next step should
be easy
When the carbon enters
the tree and oxygen exits
the tree, photosynthesis has
occured. Do you know what
process of the carbon cycle
is occuring when oxygen enters
an animal and carbon dioxide
leaves?
RESPIRATION
Think of respiration
as the opposite of
photosynthesis
photosynthesis
Yes!!! It is that simple!!!
Now you may be able to understand why
Mr. PlantMaster feels humans are thieves.
Watch and learn.
What powers the process?
Combustion can be pretty
Combustion can be useful.
What if we burn our
dead things???
Combustion can be extremely
helpful when we are burning fuel.
No matter how you look at it, combustion is fascinating!!
Which part of the carbon cycle occurs when a volcano erupts?
VOLCANISM
Ready for something crazy?
Remember, when a volcano erupts carbon moves into the atmosphere!!!
DIFFUSION
carbon moving back and forth from the water to the atmosphere

Let's end with one final video
Carbon Rocks
Here is a quick clip that explains the carbon cycle and how we may be affecting the climate due to the cycling of carbon.
zeuss is cool

Sugar
This plant has sugar in it thanks to photosynthesis.
This is my kind of sugar
We love glucose
Carrots have sugar
This wildebeast got its sugar from a plant. I am taking the sugar.
My way of getting sugar.
Sugar Rules!!!
Carbon is found in the volcanic ash
Let's review what we have
covered so far!!!
Combustion can destroy
