Questions
Factors Affecting Weather Predictions:
Air Pressure
Temperature
Air Density
Air Pressure
AKA: Barometric Pressure
Measure of the force of air "pressing down" on Earth's surface
Measured with a Barometer
Pressure caused by the force of Gravity pushing air molecules down to Earth
Air Pressure
Gravity
High AP
Low AP
Temperature
Changes as air molecules move faster or slower

faster moving -> more energy -> bump into one another -> temperatures rise

slower moving -> less energy -> do not bump into one another as much -> temperatures lower
Temperature
Summary
Temperature Moisture Elevation
High Temp = Low AP

Low Temp = High AP
Moist Air = Low AP

Dry Air = High AP
Higher Elevation = low AP

Lower Elevation = high AP
Temperature Rises

Moisture Rises

Air Pressure Lowers
Temperature Lowers

Moisture Lowers

Air Pressure Rises
How Energy Moves
How energy moves through the atmosphere
In your notes, color the parts & make a KEY!

m = maritime
c = continental
P = Polar
T = Tropical
What kind of weather should Hattiesburg, MS expect today?

A. Warmer and lots of rain

B. Severe weather followed by colder temperatures and clear skies

C. Colder and lots of rain

D. Very hot with clear skies
What kind of weather should Northern Idaho expect today?

A. Warmer and lots of rain

B. Severe weather followed by colder temperatures and clear skies

C. Colder and lots of rain

D. Very hot with clear skies
Cold Fronts
forms when a cold air mass meets & pushes under a warmer air mass
violent storms usually form
followed by cool, fair weather
moves quickly through an area
Stationary Fronts
when a warm air mass meets a cold air mass and NO movement occurs
cold & rainy for several days OR warm & rainy for several days
WILL STAY FOR SEVERAL DAYS
Air Mass
large body of air that has properties similar to the part of Earth's surface it is over
Warm air mass - develops near equator
Cold air mass - develops near poles
Air Mass
As an air mass moves, it carries the temperature/moisture with it
it will carry these characteristics with it (they tend to diminish over time)
Heating the Earth
The sun heats the Earth unevenly
Most of the heat is at the equator due to a more direct source of Sun's rays
Equator is the main source of hot air masses
N & S poles are the main source of cold air masses
Air Masses & Fronts
where 2 air masses meet is called a front
can form between any 2 contrasting air masses
often associated with some form of precipitation
Fronts
there are 3 main types of fronts:
Warm Front

Cold Front

Stationary Front
Warm Front
forms when a warm air mass pushes and slides over a colder air mass
light rain & showers form
followed by hot, humid
weather
