"You cannot be a green city and
not have recycling citywide."--Rahm Emanuel WHAT IS IT? Recycling: collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products. REUSING IS ALSO IMPORTANT Little or no processing
Minimal cost
Help your community Everyone can make an impact! It's Easy!!! Recycling includes:
manufacturing & purchasing
products made from recycled material These 3 things create a continuous loop, represented by the recycling symbol. Don't forget to reuse
Compost food scraps
Leave short grass clippings on lawns to decompose
Donate old clothing to homeless shelters, thrift stores, animal shelters and other community organizations
Take advantage of manufacturer take-back programs for your unwanted electronics What do you think? How much money would recyclable materials currently in US waste generate if they were recycled? WHAT CAN BE RECYCLED? glass
motor oil
organic wastes
electronic goods Did you know... In 2009, $485 million worth of plastic was wasted in the US. (www.kab.org) ECONOMICAL BENEFITS Recycling process is cheaper than manufacturing from natural resources
ie: Tree paper vs. Recycled paper
Less money is used on landfill space Problems with Landfills Money also spent on incinerators
Parks or forests have to be sacrificed to make space
Recycling is the only way! ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS Recycling:
Reduces the need to build landfills and incinerators. Did you know... Over a ton of natural resources are conserved for every ton of glass recycled
(www.kab.org) What do you think? Recycled paper production creates __% less air pollution & __% less water pollution than virgin paper production. a) $975 million
b) $4.5 billion
c) $7 billion a) 74% & 35%
b) 45% & 23%
c) 60% & 31% What do you think? On average, how many pounds of solid waste does a person in the US discard each day? a) 2.5
b) 4
c) 6 Wildlife Preservation Recycling:
Preserves the animals' natural habitat
Prevents animals from being injured by improperly discarded trash SOCIAL INVOLVEMENT
NEEDED City-wide recycling programs
Donation Drop Boxes
Public education & promotion
programs WHAT IS REUSING? Reuse:
preventing solid waste from entering the landfill and improving our communities by taking useful products discarded by those who no longer want them and providing them to those who do
Good for our society & environment Recycling is a necessity Many products are NOT biodegradable
ie: Car tires, Plastics
Improperly disposing certain products contaminates the water supply
ie: Batteries If you laid out all the aluminum cans recycled in 2010 end to end, they could circle the earth 169 times
www.kab.org Saves Natural Resources Reduces or eliminates pollution that occurs with use of raw materials. Saves energy when manufacturing recyclables into new products. Reduces green house gas emissions. Stimulates the development of green technology. Get Involved! Shop smart
Purchase recycled products
Buy in bulk Convenience is key
Put collection bins in various places around your home
Make signs
