What Drives the Spec &
Construction Process?
The technology explosion is influencing every industry including the construction industry. Social media builds virtual communities and allows instant information exchanges and collaboration among everyone in the community. These communities may be small or global or anything between as may be needed to suit a particular purpose.
How is technology changing the process?
Are there alternative project deliverables?
Can manual processes be automated?

What is a Deliverable?

Deliverable is a term used in project management to describe a tangible or intangible object produced as a result of the project that is intended to be delivered to a customer (either internal or external). A deliverable could be a report, a document, a server upgrade or any other building block of an overall project.

In technical projects, deliverables can further be classified as hardware , software, or design documents.

What is Project Delivery?

American Institute of Architects (AIA) – “…the method selected to allocate roles, responsibilities, risks, and rewards among the parties accomplishing the design, preparation of construction documents, and management or a construction project.”

The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) – “…the comprehensive process of assigning the contractual responsibilities for designing and constructing a project…,” and”…is fundamentally a people method…,” because the”…success or failure of any delivery method depends upon the performance, trust, and cooperation among the parties.”

The AIA California Council – Integrated Project Delivery – A Working Definition, published by McGraw-Hill Construction - .”…approach that integrates people, systems, business structures and practices into a process that collaboratively harnesses the talents and insights of all participants to reduce waste and optimize efficiency through all phases of design, fabrication and construction.”

Are there alternate project deliverables?

Document Collaboration
Document collaboration in a general sense simply refers to more than one person co-authoring a document.

Refers to ways for a team of workers to work together on an electronic document from computer terminals based anywhere in the world.

For this reason, an increasing number of firms are using email less and file sharing and document collaboration tools more.

If we did, would we:
find appropriate products more easily?
verify product requirements and claims more accurately?
document products more adequately?
coordinate products during design and construction more precisely?

How and when could this work to the advantage of the majority of the industry. Someday when:
Level of understanding is more widespread
Production and organization standards were more universal
Enough people are willing to accept change and pitch in and help that change

UNTIL THEN I THNK WE MAY FEEL LIKE……

Do we all proceed as I just described?
There is still a need to:

FIND appropriate products

VERIFY qualities of a product

DOCUMENT products to ensure they are correctly incorporated into a project

COORDINATE documentation during design and construction

This program is registered with the AIA/CES for continuing professional education. As such, it does not include content that may be deemed or construed to be an approval or endorsement by the AIA of any material of construction or any method or manner of handling, using, distributing, or dealing in any material or product. Questions related to specific materials, methods, and services will be addressed at the conclusion of this presentation.

WE ARE ALL CONNECTED
This program will explore the influence of collaboration technology and social media on the design and construction teams' traditional specifications and construction processes. The technology and community interaction suggests alternative project deliverables and automated processes may be required to effectively deliver design and construction services.
