Industrialization

Occurs in the late 1800s.
How is this Possible?
Oil
Coal
GAS
THE LIGHT BULB
THE TELEPHONE
THOMAS EDISON
ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL
LUMBER
METALS
BUT WHAT ELSE DID WE NEED IN ORDER TO BECOME AN INDUSTRIAL POWER BESIDES JUST RESOURCES?
WHAT TYPE OF TECHNOLOGY?

THE SEWING MACHINE
REMEMBER THERE ARE 3 THINGS NEEDED IN ORDER TO BECOME AN INDUSTRIAL SUPER POWER

THEY ARE....

TRANS ATLANTIC TELEGRAPH
THE
TECHNOLOGY
RESOURCES
The U.S. I very lucky because we have an abundant amount of resources within our borders allowing us to compete with other countries without relying on foreign groups.

What type of resources are we
talking about?
THE RAILROAD
WE CAN THANK GOOD OLD HONEST ABE FOR THIS. HE SIGNED THE PACIFIC RAILWAY ACT IN 1862 LEADING TO THIS.....
SO WE HAVE LOOKED OVER
1. RESOURCES
2.NEW TECHNOLOGIES

3.???????
Promontory Point Utah 1869
CENTRAL PACIFIC
WHAT TYPE OF IMMIGRANT WOULD HAVE BEEN MOST LIKELY TO BUILD THE RAIL LINES IN THE WEST?
UNION PACIFIC
SOOOOOOO....
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL OF THIS NEW DEVELOPMENT IN INDUSTRY?

THE BIG BUSINESS LEADERS OF THE LATE 19TH AND EARLY 20TH CENTURY
ANDREW CARNEGIE
JOHN D ROCKEFELLER
CORNELIUS VANDERBILT
JAY GOULD
STEEL INDUSTRY
OIL
RAILWAYS
RAILWAYS

ROBBER BARON
THESE LARGE INDUSTRIES LEAD TO NEW WAYS OF DOING BUSINESS TO BEAT THE COMPETITION AND MAXIMIZE PROFITS FOR STOCK HOLDERS WHILE NEGLECTING WORKERS.
WHAT IS THIS TYPE OF BUSINESS POLICY CALLED?
MADE FAMOUS BY ANDREW CARNEGIE

HE CUT OUT THE MIDDLE MAN AND OWNED EVERY PART OF HIS STEEL EMPIRE. FROM THE RAW MATERIALS TO THE ENERGY, TO THE TRANSPORTATION TO THE MANUFACTURING. IT WAS ALL OWENED BY HIM.
HORIZONTAL INTEGRATION
MADE FAMOUS BY JOHN ROCKEFELLER

HE WOULD BUY COMPETITORS IN THE SAME INDUSTRY AND THE SAME POINT OF PRODUCTION REDUCING COMPETITION AND INCREASING THE MARKET SHARE
SINCE WE WERE ABLE TO LINK THE COUNTRY TOGETHER GOODS AND RAW MATERIALS COULD REACH NEW LOCATIONS AND MARKETS WHICH WERE NOT POSSIBLE BEFORE
SO HOW WAS ALL OF THIS GROWTH IN PRODUCTION POSSIBLE?
LAISSEZ-FAIRE
THE IDEA THAT THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD STAY OUT OF THE ECONOMY EXCEPT TO PROTECT PRIVATE PROPERTY AND TO MAINTAIN PEACE
HINT:
"LET DO"
WITH NO GOVERNMENT INVOLVEMENT COMPANIES WERE ABLE TO CUT COSTS IN VARIOUS WAYS
THEY COULD NOW SOLICIT THEIR EMPLOYEES TO WORK IN DEPRORABLE CONDITIONS FOR FOR VERY LITTLE PAY
WHEN EMPLOYEES WOULD REQUEST A RAISE OR TO HAVE SAFER WORKING CONDITIONS THEY WOULD BE FIRED AND REPLACED INSTEAD OF HAVING THEIR REQUEST MET
SOON UNIONS WERE FORMED AND WERE ABLE TO COLLECTIVELY BARGAIN
WHAT WAS THE FIRST NATION WIDE UNION?
COMPANIES FIGHT BACK
THESE BIG INDUSTRIES INSTEAD OF AGREEING TO THE UNION'S REQUESTS WOULD PLACE THEIR EMPLOYEES ON BLACK LISTS AND FIRE THEM, OR ESTABLISH LOCKOUTS IN ORDER TO KEEP THEM FROM WORKING UNTIL THEY DISMANTLED THE UNION AND CAME BACK TO WORK
THE BREAKING POINT
STRIKE!!!!
THE EMPLOYEES IN UNIONS WITH NO OTHER ALTERNATIVE EVENTUALLY WENT ON STRIKE WHICH IN THIS ERA WAS VERY SERIOUS. MANY TIMES A STRIKE MEANT LIFE OR DEATH.
GOVERNMENT INVOLVEMENT
ONCE VIOLENCE BREAKS OUT THE GOVERNMENT BEGINS TO INVESTIGATE AND REFORM BEGINS
KNIGHTS OF LABOR WERE THE FIRST NATION WIDE UNION
THEY ADMITTED MEN, WOMEN, AFRICAN AMERICANS, IMMIGRANTS, AND UNSKILLED WORKERS
AMERICAN FEDERATION OF LABOR (AFL)
SKILLED WORKERS ONLY

HARDER TO REPLACE WITH SCABS, BETTER BARGAINING POWER.
PULLMAN STRIKE 1893
WORKERS WAGES CUT, COMPANY OWNED HOMES RENT WAS NOT LOWERED. 30 KILLED
HOMESTEAD STRIKE 1892
ACTUALLY A LOCKOUT. WORKERS VS PRIVATE ARMY CALLED THE PINKERTONS.

10 WORKERS KILLED, 3 PINKERTONS KILLED
INDUSTRY CREATES JOB OPPORTUNITIES
THERE IS NOW A NEED FOR A LARGE WORK FORCE IN AREAS NOT YET EQUIPPED FOR A MASSIVE POPULATION
CITIES EXPLODE !!!!!!!
WITH FACTORY JOBS BECOMING MORE AVAILABLE, FAMILIES MOVE OUT OF THE COUNTRY AND INTO THE CITIES TO FIND WORK

WITH THIS RAPID POPULATION INCREASE, CITIES WERE NOT ABLE TO KEEP UP. LIVING CONDITIONS BECOME UNSANITARY GROSSSSSSS!!!
URBANIZATION
IMMIGRATION!!!
WITH THIS NEW LABOR DEMAND IMMIGRATION TO THE UNITED STATES SKYROCKETED!!!!
IMMIGRANTS EFFORTS TO ASSIMILATE
NATIVE BORN AMERICANS BLAMED IMMIGRANTS FOR THE CRIME AND VIOLENCE AT THE TIME. IN REALITY CRIME RATES FOR IMMIGRANTS WERE NOT SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER THAN OTHER AMERICANS

THE CHINESE EXCLUSION ACT WAS A NATIVIST MOVEMENT
REACTIONS TO IMMIGRANTS
BECAUSE OF THIS NATIVIST MOVEMENT IMMIGRANTS ATTEMPTED TO "ASSIMILATE" AND BECOME "REAL" AMERICANS LEAVING THEIR FOREIGN IDENTITY BEHIND.
WHERE ARE ALL THESE PEOPLE COMING FROM?
I THOUGHT EVERYONE WAS A FARMER
THE CHINESE
VERTICAL INTEGRATION
WHAT WAS THIS TYPE OF BUSINESS POLICY CALLED?
REMEMBER THE CHINESE
EXCLUSION ACT?
SOCIAL CLASSES BEGIN TO DEVELOPE
HIGH CLASS
MIDDLE CLASS
WORKING CLASS
NATIVISM
PREFERENCE TOWARDS NATIVE-BORN PEOPLE AND A DESIRE TO LIMIT IMMIGRATION
NATIVISM?

WHAT IS THAT?
IS THIS NEW?
