Transcript of parenting
“Nobody’s stepping up to adopt such hard to place children, but they don’t let us adopt them.”
54 year old Thom O’Reilly, who has been with his partner for 25years.
The government does not keep statistics on adoptions by gay and lesbian couples but it is estimated that 250,000 children in the U.S. are being raised by same sex parents and about 5% of them were adopted.
Stereotypes in parenting The American academy of pediatrics, the child welfare league of America and adoption advocacy groups all did a research about children with gay and lesbian parents. Research found that these children fare just as well as those raised in families with a mother and father.
Study by Ellen C. Perrin Researchers looked at 15 studies on more than 500 children evaluating possible things such as possible stigma, teasing and social isolation, adjustment and self-esteem, opposite gender role models and sexual orientation.
One study including 260 children raised by heterosexual mothers or same sex mothers found no differences in intelligence, type or prevalence of psychiatric disorders, self- esteem, well-being, peer/couple relationships or parental stress.
Some studies show that single heterosexual parent’s children have more difficulties than children who have parents of the same sex.

Study cont’d Studies show that children raised by same sex parents are more likely to be less aggressive, more nurturing to peers, more tolerant to diversity, and more inclined to play with both boys and girls toys.
These children also show of having no more problems then children with heterosexual parents and they are also more tolerant of differences.
Something to note: all the studies done in this article were consistent.

Has helped bring approximately 850 babies to couples since it began in 1996 and 75% of them were gay couples.
Has worked with celebrities such as B.D. Wong and his partner, and Neil Patrick Harris and his partner.
Has never had a case where a surrogate tried to assert parental rights and keep the baby.
Facts Surrogates help gay couples bypass legal challenges because the baby is genetically linked to one of the men.
Surrogates are normally 21-37 years old, married and have children of their own.
Surrogates and their husbands if any, have to undergo physical, medical and psychological screening to make sure they can handle the stresses and strain.
Fewer than 1/10 of 1% end in court battles.
Most surrogates are okay with doing it because they have had children of their own and they just want to help other people that are infertile or cannot reproduce
About 80% of surrogates say they are willing to work with gay men and half prefer to.
