Abstract
The purpose of this procedure was to see if food tastes the same with or without your scent. If you have your scent while eating you can taste so many more flavors than you know. If you don't have your scent then you only taste a certain group of flavors and your food becomes bland. We had a good amount of procedures we had to go threw to accomplish this experiment. We had to make sure we followed these thoroughly so the experience of tasting the food was clear.
During the procedures we had to be careful and make sure we did everything right so it wouldn't mess with our results. For the experiment we had to get many different foods and materials. For the materials they were mostly simple and useful utensils that we use on a daily bases. For the food we had to find other substances that would help make them the right consistency. The procedures were helpful to follow cause they gave you an understanding of the experiment.
Our results were conclusive. They reassured us of our hypothesis. The data we got from the experiment helped us understand our conclusion. We mostly understood that if you don't have your sense of smell it does affect your taste. If it affects your taste it can make you have a different prispective on the food you eat on your daily basis.

Materials
The materials that we used for this project are the following:
-8 , 8oz plastic cups
-8 spoons
-1, 12 by 12 cutting boards
-1 sharp knife
-1 blender
-1 liter of milk depending on the food you use
-1 liter of water also depending on the food you have
-8 different foods/snacks you eat on a regular bases

Application
This project relates to our lives because there are many cases where some people don't have a sense of smell or they don't have taste. By us doing this project we can see what it's like to be in their place and we can also share the information that we collected with others.

The purpose for this experiment was to find out if your scent affected your taste. Our hypothesis is if you do not have your sense of smell the taste of your food will be bland. Our problem is intending to figure out if food taste the same with or without smell. The independent variable would be the testing of the food. The dependent variable is the taste of the food under different circumstances.
Procedures
1) Start off with 3 or 4 classmates/students/ or friends who volunteer to be tested on.
2) Make sure that you are aware of their allergies if they have any and make sure that you have their parents permission to be tested on.
3)Make 4 different charts each one should include each persons name or number and the foods they try.The first two label it " descriptions ". Make sure you put " with nose plug " and the other " without nose plug ". The other two will be the same set up but instead of descriptions you would label it just "guesses" . Again make sure you you label it with or without a nose plug.
4)Gather the 8 foods/snacks for each separate person.
5)Blend each separate food with water or milk so they all have the same texture and also so if the person who is eating the food won't chew and be able to distinguish the what food it is.
6)After the food is blended put each one in their separate cup.
7)Blind fold whoever will be tested on so they won't be able to look at the food and give it away.
8)Put a nose clip on the person who will be tested for the first round of the food.
9)For the second round of food they try it without the nose clip.
10)Feed the person the food with a spoon and collect your data.
11)Every time they try a food make sure you ask them to describe what it tasted like and to take a guess on what the food was.
12)Make sure you fill out the information in your charts. Remember you have two different rounds to fill out your chart. First round fill out the chart " with nose plug" and the second round "without the nose plug".
13)After you finish collecting your data you will fill out your last two charts which is the "guesses" charts. Which you will rank the guesses as if they were wrong(0), close (1), or right(2). Remember to fill out both with and without nose plug charts.
14)After all these steps you can conclude your experiment.
The nose is important to taste because if your nose is closed you can't smell the
item tasted. If you can't smell it then you can't recognize the food you're eating or describe the taste. The scent usually travels to the back entrance of your nasal passage which then you can tell what food you're eating. Also be able to describe the taste. There are about 10,000 different scents to distinguish from. They are recognized by receptors in the olfactory bulb. These are not by the tongue taste receptors.
The tongue does know our basic tastes, but the nose knows more on the complex
side. The complex flavors are from our sense of smell. We primarily detect savoring ] allot of different flavors that we know of with our nose. There are special receptors at the back of our throat that detect aerosolized molecules from our food. There are signals sent to the brains olfactory bulb and the frontal lube from the receptors that it constructs a perception of specific flavors.
Your tongue is covered with about 10,000 taste buds, which detect five different types of tastes; salty, bitter, sweet, sour, and umami. Umami discovered by Japenese means delicious you also have taste buds on the roof of your mouth and sense of smell located at the roof of each nasal cavity. These can detect up to a thousand different types of chemicals.
On a similar project "Molly C" tried to identify if fruit juice taste better with taste only, smell only or both taste and smell. Her hypothesis was that the student would identify the juice better with taste and smell alone her second hypothesis was that the student would identify it best with smell alone not taste. Her results were that the students could identify the juice better with taste alone than with smell.
CAUTION: Your testers may throw up or may show gag reflexes during this experiment!
Our conclusion was that if you don't have your sense of smell then your food would be bland and you wouldn't have a widespread amount of flavors that you usually have when you do have your sense of smell. The data showed that more times people had no idea what they were trying when they had there nose plugged. Our hypothesis was correct because of the people who were tested all of them were not able to guess the right food for at least three of them. Even though its harder for you to taste the more differentiated flavors you are still able to taste the basic flavors your tongue has equipped for you to taste originally. So this experiment does help us conclude that if you do not have your sense of smell then its harder for you to be able to distinguish some flavors but not all.
Analysis
Our graphs showed that for the participants it was harder for them to distinguish flavors when there nose is plugged rather than unplugged. Although it was hard to describe the flavors some of the more common flavors were able to be tasted. So this basically tells us you can still taste the main flavors the tongue can originally taste because of the taste buds which is were you get your original taste.
