Transcript of Ferdinand Magellan

The Great Explorer
Ferdinand Magellan
On September 20, 1520, Magellan led five ships with a crew of 250 out of the Spanish port of Sancar de Barrameda. Their goal was to find a water passage around the Americas and continue on to the East Indies. They didn’t know of what was beyond the shores of South America and assumed it was a short distance across the Pacific Ocean to the Spice Islands. It was a very long journey.
Magellan wanted to convert the natives to Christianity, Magellan decides that a show of force/power, particularly the power of his muskets and cannon, against a nearby tribe will impress the natives into submission (obedience)… he orders an attack, but doesn’t take into account that the reefs along the beach wont allow for an effective range for the cannon to fire. The Spanish crew starts firing their guns, but the range is too far. The natives take the opportunity to get into the water and throw spears, this overwhelmed the crew and they left Magellan in panic.
Places that Magellan Traveled to:
The New King of Portugal
During the late 1517, he married a lady named Maria Caldera Beatriz Barbosa. They had two children, both who died at a very young age. His children were Carlos de Magalhaes and Rodrigo de Magalhaes.

Facts about Magellan's journey:

First Voyage
On 1505, Magellan was sent to India by the Portuguese to help install the Francisco de Almieda, also known as the Portuguese Viceroy.
During 1509, one of the kings decided not to fund for the viceroy. There he lost all the help he could get to fund for the Almeida and went away without permission.
By 1514, all the businesses would not want to hire him because of the true accusations that were laid upon him.
By the time no employment offers were there, the Spanish are looking for a new way to reach the "Spice Islands" (modern day Indonesia and India) after the Treaty of Tordesillas began, which divides the world in half. Similar to the way Columbus thought by sailing east, Magellan knew he could reach the "Spice Islands" by sailing west through the New World.
The Spanish and the Spice Islands
The Treaty of Tordesillas
The idea of sailing west to reach the "Spice Islands" was not supported by the king of Portugal, King Manuel I. Magellan then proposed the idea to the Spanish king named King Charles I.
On the year of 1518, March 22, the Spanish King approved of Magellan's journey and gave him a large amount of money. By 1519 of September, he set sailed towards the Atlantic Ocean.
