The Hunger Games
by Suzanne Collins
Hundreds of years from now...
America has fallen.
Following a brutal civil war, America is gone, and the nation of Panem has risen from the ashes.
The nation is ruled by The Capitol, a seemingly-utopian city of technology and wealth.
Utopia:
Utopia: A perfect society in which all people enjoy comfort and ease.
Meanwhile, the rest of the nation lives in poverty, struggling to for survival under the dictatorship of The Capitol.
To punish the districts for the uprising, each District is forced to give one boy and one girl in tribute to the annual Hunger Games.
The tributes will be forced to fight to the death in a nationally-televised arena.
Twelve Districts remain.
A thirteenth District was previously crushed by The Capitol for rebellion.
But one spark...
can start a fire!

Characteristics of Dystopian Society
* Propaganda is used to control the citizens of a society.
* Information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted.
* Citizens are perceived to be under constant surveillance.
* A figurehead or concept is worshiped by the citizens of society.
* Citizens have a fear of the outside world.
* The natural world is banished and distrusted.
* Citizens live in a dehumanized state.
* Citizens conform to uniform expectations. Individuality and dissent are bad, and sometimes treated as crimes.
Types of Dystopian Controls
* Governmental Controls: Red tape, endless regulations and rules, and mindless or brutal officials. Eg: "Brazil"
* Corporate Controls: One or more large corporations run society through products, media, and advertising. Eg: "Minority Report", "Running Man", "The Lorax"
* Technological Control: Computers, robots, or other scientific tools are used to control society. Eg: "I, Robot", "The Matrix", "The Terminator"
* Philosophical/Psychological/Religious Control: Ideology is enforced through a dictatorship or theocracy. Eg: "The Village"
