The public transport in Budapest is pretty reliable. You need to validate a new ticket after each change. You can buy 1-2-3 day tickets as well. There are regular night services covering the whole city.
Don't be afraid of the big city picture, biking in the centre is safe and may be the cheapest and fastest way to move from A to B.
