About
The Rothschild family is widely known for their wealth and success in the wine and banking industry. Rothschild means red shield in German. Izaak Elchanan Rothschild was the first member of the family to use the name, but their family name is Bauer and they are originally from Austria. Mayer Amschel Rothschild managed to establish an international banking industry with the help of his five sons. He began compiling his fortune during the height of the Napoleonic Wars between 1792 and 181.5 The Rothschild's are Ashkenazim (Jews of European descent). They are believed to posses the largest private fortune in the world with a family net worth of 400 billion US dollars. They controlled most of the wealth in Europe during the fourteenth century. Now entering their seventh generation, The Rothschild banking industry remains powerful even though their wealth has decreased over the years after being scattered among many members.

A goldsmith named Amschel Moses Bauer opens a counting house. He becomes a money lender. There is a red sign above the entrance to the counting house and on the sign there is a red hexagram.. That same year Mayer Amschel Bauer is born in the ghetto of Frankfurt, Germany.
Fun Fact: A hexagram numerically and geometrically construes into the number 666 which some believe is the devils number

Mayer Amschel Bauer works for a bank in Hanover, Germany but after the death of his father, he returns to Frankfurt to run his fathers business. He becomes familiar with the red hexagram and decides to change his name to Rothschild which means red shield and/or sign in German. Later, Mayer Rothschild begins to do business with Prince William and other members of the court

The Rothschild Family Coat of Arms contains a clenched fist with five arrows symbolizing the five dynasties established by the five sons of Mayer Rothschild. The English translation for the latin writing on the bottom of the coat of arms means Unity, Integrity, and Diligence.

Nathan Mayer Rothschild was almost single-handedly financing the British war effort, organizing the shipment of gold and silver to the Duke of Wellington's armies across Europe, as well as helping the British give money to their continental allies. In 1815 alone, the Rothschild's provided and loaned $869 million dollars to Britain's continental allies.

After Nathan Mayer Rothschild opened his business in Manchester in 1806, he arranged a £320 million loan to the Prussian government. After this loan he had become so powerful, that he was able to fix the market-liquidity crisis in England.

After the four of the brothers were each elevated to the hereditary nobility by Austrian Emperor Francis I in 1816 and a fifth brother, Nathan, was elevated in 1818, All of them were granted the Austrian title of baron (lord) or Freiherr (free lord) on 29 September 1822.
1825
The Rothschild family was heavily involved in the Independence of Brazil from Portugal . It was agreed that the Brazilian government should pay a compensation of two million pounds sterling to the Kingdom of Portugal to accept Brazil's independence. N M Rothschild & Sons (Nathan Mayer Rothschild and Sons) led in raising the money for the government of of Brazil. In 1825, Nathan Rothschild raised £2,000,000, and was probably secretly involved in the earlier portion of this loan which raised £1,000,000. Once Portugal recognized Brazil's independence, they believed that Brazil should take over repayment of the £1,500,000 loan made to the Portuguese government in 1823 by N M Rothschild & Sons.

The Japanese approach the Rothschild families in London and Paris for funding during the Russo-Japanese War. The London association's issue of Japanese war bonds totaled £1.03 billion

Lloyd George, the soon to be British Prime Minister claims that Lord Nathan Rothschild was the most powerful man in Britain.
The Rothschild Counting House in Frankfurt

Frankfurt House closes its doors after more than a century in business due to the fact that it was abandoned. It isn't until 1989 that the family returns, when N M Rothschild & Sons, the British investment arm, plus Bank Rothschild AG, and the Swiss branch, set up a representative banking office in Frankfurt.
1854
Nathaniel de Rothschild purchases Château Brane-Mouton and renames it Château Mouton Rothschild. This marks the beginning of The Rothschild's 150 years and counting participation in the production of wine.
1868
James Mayer de Rothschild purchases Château Lafite and renamed it Château Lafite Rothschild, a wine estate neighboring Château Brane-Mouton. Today, the Rothschild family owns many wine estates: their estates in France include Château Clarke, Château de Malengin, Château Clerc-Milon, Château d'Armailhac, Château Duhart-Milon, Château Lafite Rothschild, Château de Laversine, Château des Laurets, Château L'Évangile, Château Malmaison, Château de Montvillargenne, Château Mouton Rothschild, Château de la Muette, Château Rieussec and Château Rothschild d'Armainvilliers. They also own wine estates across North America, South America, South Africa and Australia.

James de Mayer Rothschild died later this year. James had established the established de Rothschild Frères in Paris. Following the Napoleonic Wars, he played a major role in financing the construction of railroads and the mining business that helped make France an industrial power. By 1980, the Paris business employed about 2,000 people and had an annual turnover of $5 billion.

Nathaniel Rothschild is born in England. He is the fourth child of Nathan Mayer Rothschild, the founder of the British branch of the family.
1820's
Salomon Mayer Rothschild establishes a bank in Vienna, creating an Austrian branch. Nevertheless, during World War II they had to surrender their bank to the Nazis and flee the country. The Nazis destroyed and confiscated their Rothschild palaces. The palaces were famous for their size. More importantly, in these palaces lay paintings, armour, tapestries and statues. All family members escaped the Holocaust, some of them moving to the United States, and returning to Europe only after the war. In 1999, the government of Austria agreed to return to the Rothschild family 250 art treasures taken by the Nazis.

Nathan Rothschild was sent to England as he was one of the original five sons of Mayer Rothschild. From there, he created the English branch. Nathan was also the most successful out of his five brothers.

James Rothschild is one of the original sons. He founded the french branch of the Rothschild family. He became the most powerful banker in the country and following the Napoleonic Wars. James played a major role in financing the construction of railroads and the mining business that helped make France an industrial power.
