Transcript of THE SOLAR SYSTEM

Mercury is a rocky planet.
It's the smallest planet of our solar system.
The closest planet to the Sun.
Its average distance from the Sun is 57 million kilometers.
Mercury doesn't have any atmosphere, so its 'sky' is always black.
It's 4,878 km in diameter.
One day on Mercury lasts 58.7 Earth days.
One year on Mercury lasts 88 days.
The temperature on its surface is 167 degrees Celsius.
One kilogram on Earth weighs 0.378 kilograms on Mercury.
Venus is a rocky planet.
It's Earth's sister planet.
It is a little smaller than Earth.
It's the second planet from the Sun.
Its average temperature is 449 degrees Celsius.
One day on Venus is like 246.16 Earth days.
It's 12,107 km in diameter.
Like the Earth, Venus has an atmosphere but it consists of about 96% carbon dioxide. Its sky is orange-red.
One kilogram on Earth weighs 0.907 kilograms on Venus.
Earth is a rocky planet.
It's the third planet from the Sun.
It's 149,597,891 kilometres from the Sun.
One year on Earth last 365 days, 6 hours and 16 minutes.
One day on Earth lasts 23 hours and 56 minutes.
Its average temperature is 15 degrees Celsius.
It's 12,756.32 kilometres in diameter.
It has an atmosphere. It consists of Nitrogen (78%), Oxygen (21%), Argon (0.93%) and Carbon dioxide (0.038%). It's sky is blue.
Satellites: The Moon
Mars is a rocky planet.
It's the fourth planet from the Sun.
Its average distance from the Sun is 227,936,640 kilometres.
One year on Mars lasts 686.98 earth days.
One day on Mars lasts 24 hours and 37 minutes.
One kilogram on Earth weighs 0.377 kilograms on Mars.
Average Temperature: -55 degrees Celsius.
Atmosphere: Carbon dioxide.
Sky colour: dark blue.
Satellites: 2 satellites - Phobos and Deimos.
Jupiter is a gas giant.
It's the solar system's largest planet.
It's the fifth planet from the Sun.
It consist of Hydrogen (90%) and Helium (10%).
Its average distance from the Sun is about 780 million kilometres.
Diameter: about 140 thousand kilometres.
Day length: 9 hours and 56 minutes.
One kilogram on Earth weighs 2.364 kilograms on Jupiter.
Year length: 4,331 days.
Average temperature: -145 degrees Celcius.
Satellites: 63 satellites. The four largest are Europa, Io, Callisto and Ganymede.
Uranus is a gas giant.
It's the seventh planet from the sun.
It consists of Hydrogen (85%), Helium (12%) and Methane (3%).
Its average distance from the Sun is 2,870,972,170 kilometres.
Diameter: 51,118 kilometers.
Day length:
17 hours and 15 minutes.
Year Length:
30,687 earth days.
One kilogram on Earth weighs 0.889 kilograms on Uranus.
Average temperature:
-357 degrees Celsius.
Satellites:
27 satellites. The five largest are: Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Oberon and Titania.
Neptune is a gas giant.
It's the eighth planet from the sun.
It consist of Hydrogen (80%), Helium (19%) and Methane.
Its average distance from the Sun is 4,498,252,900 kilometres.
Diameter: 49,532 kilometres.
Day length: 16 hours and 7 minutes.
Year Length: 60,190 earth days.
One kilogram on Earth weighs 1.125 kilograms on Neptune.
Average temperature: -214 degrees Celsius.
Satellites: 13 satellites. The two largest are Triton and Nereid.
The Sun is our star.
It is a huge ball of gases, Hydrogen and Helium.
It's 150 million kilometres from Earth.
It's volume is about 1,300,000 times larger than the Earth.
The temperature on its surface is 5,538 degrees Celsius.
It's about 1.4 million kilometres in diametre.
One kilogram on Earth weighs 28 kilograms on the Sun.
One day on the Sun lasts 609 hours and 7 minutes.
Galaxies are large groups of stars.
There are more than 100,000,000,000 galaxies in the known Universe.
Small galaxies have around 1,000,000,000 stars.
The Milky Way (our galaxy) is an elliptical galaxy. It contains about 100,000,000,000 stars.
Big galaxies can have many more that 100,000,000,000 stars.
There are three types of galaxies: spiral galaxies, elliptical galaxies, and irregular galaxies.
The largest known galaxies are as much as two million light-years long.
The Solar System is made up of the Sun, eight planets, five dwarf planets, over one hundred sixty moons, half a million asteroids, more than three thousand comets, dust, and gas.
Our solar System is over 4 billion years old.
The Solar System consists of the inner Solar System and the Outer Solar System.
The
Inner Solar System
has Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. These are sometimes called the
rocky planets
.
The
Outer Solar System
has Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. These are sometimes called the
gas giants
.
The
Asteroid Belt
is between Jupiter and Mars. It divides the Inner from the Outer Solar System.
Saturn is a gas giant.
It's the solar system's second largest planet.
It's the sixth planet from the Sun.
It consists of Hydrogen (75%) and Helium (24.3%).
Its average distance from the Sun is about 1.5 billion kilometres.
Its diameter is about 120 thousand kilometres.
Day length: 10 hours and 39 minutes.
One kilogram on Earth weighs 0.916 kilograms on Saturn.
