By: Neha Patel Why might two people on the same drug regimen not necessarily take the same dosage to treat the same illness? same drug different doses If two patients have the same illness, does that mean they take the same dose of their medication? Not necessarily. Age, size, the severity of the illness, and how the patient reacts to the drug will determine the dose. For instance; an adult would take a larger dose than a child because, of the size and age. Although the child could take more if their illness is more severe.
1* two major reasons The genetic reasons are due to our genes. For example; a gene product, like protein, is a metabolizing enzyme which breaks the drug down. The protein will also transport the drug across a barrier, and modify it to make it water soluble. If the gene product is the slightest bit different in one patient vs. another patient, then the patient will achieve different levels of the drug in their blood system. This explains why the patient will have a different response.
2* aspirin children vs. adults two major reasons When a patient reacts differently to a drug it's due to two reasons. They are genetic and environmental. Environmental deals with the bacteria in the patients digestive system. The bacteria living in the digestive system could possibly break down or alter the drug before they are absorbed into the blood stream. If the patient has habits such as smoking, drinking or even taking other prescribed drugs, it could alter the body's ability to metabolize the drug.
2* Aspirin is most commonly known to be taken for pains, colds, and the flu. Most children are given aspirin when they have a viral infection. Although, taking aspirin as a child has been linked to a rare and often fatal illness, Reye's syndrome. Reye's syndrome is a disease children get while recovering from a viral infection. Aspirin doesn't cause Reye's syndrome, but it's been linked to it. Research shows that 90-95% of Reye's patients in the United States had taken aspirin during a recent illness. 4* Now if an adult has a viral infection they can take 300-900mg of aspirin every 4-6 hours. 5* conclusion Now just because two patients have the same illness, doesn't mean they'll take the same dose to treat it. The drug will always react differently depending on the patient. Size, the severity of the illness, and the age are major factors.
