Multicultural day is to share the heritages of the students, staff, and families of HMSA.
It also provides HMSA students the opportunity to get to know about cultures other than their own.
In order to meet the World Language Standards for Hawthorne Math and Science Academy, all students in the Spanish program are allowed to participate as directed by their Spanish teacher.
*Performances require auditions.
What are we looking for?
Authentic, native dances, songs, demonstrations, etc.
Smaller groups function better (4-6 people.) Maximum of 10 people in one group.
Each group needs a leader, and the leader is responsible with communicating directly to Ms. Jordan
The leader must keep their group aware of times and dates of auditions and practices
Rated G performances are
Music must not contain any vulgar language (in any language)
Students will present a lesson in class. Outstanding lessons will be invited to present again at the multicultural celebration.
Booths show interesting facts about a
country or teach a skill.
Regional dialects of English
Languages other than English
Display board with a visual
Something flashy to catch people’s eyes
Engaging activity (try to give your audience something to take away or make them a part of your presentation)
Catch people’s attention
Sing (in a different language)
Play a traditional instrument
Provide an interactive activity
Preliminary Presentations in the Spanish class
A visual (poster board or power point) is required.
The most interesting and most engaging presentations will be chosen.
For those who are selected to present the night of the multicultural celebration
Grades will be based on how much the student/s interact/s with the people.
Booth committee members and/or a Spanish teacher will personally be going around and grading each and every one of the booths.

Students can work in groups no more than 4 people.
A limited number of groups will be chosen per class.
Each group must choose a specific country to represent and check in with Ms. Jordan before that country is taken.
No country can be repeated more than once. A region within a country is an acceptable topic, but may not be repeated by any other group.

Fashion Show Guidelines:
You may wear an outfit for a culture other than your own.
You must provide your own outfit and be willing to wear it and walk on the stage.
You must come to an informational meeting for the details if you are wish to participate in the fashion show.

in the Multipurpose room
Students may choose to create a sculpture, drawing, painting, or original design for the art display. The art selection must be connected in some way to a particular country or culture.
Students may see Spanish teacher for individual guidelines and expectations, but work needs to be superior quality in order to be displayed for the Multicultural Event.
It should be evident that a SIGNIFICANT amount of time was spent creating the work of art. Students will write a brief description of the work and will submit the work no later than
Parents are encouraged to donate food for the pot luck.
10 servings =5 volunteer hours
Maximum number of hours 15 hours (30 servings) for the Multicultural event.
Parents must sign up (by returning the bottom portion of the blue informational letter) by to receive volunteer hours for their donation.
Allergy list must be turned in with the food on the day of the event.
The food must be dropped off ready to be served on May 27, 2016 at 5:30 PM
Committee leaders are in charge of different chairs for Multicultural; there will be a list of leaders announced/ posted soon. Please contact them with questions, and they will answer your questions as soon as possible.
