Rhetorical Analysis of Famous Movie Speeches
SOAPStone Analysis
-About to fight an epic battle against the orcs/armies of Mordor
-Odds not in their favor, they are outnumbered
Speaker: Aragon, heir to the throne of Gondor, leading the armies into battle, part of the Fellowship of the Ring
Occasion: Middle Earth, outside the Black Gates into Mordor
Audience: Soldiers from Gondor and Rohan
Purpose: To inspire the men to not give up or lose faith
Summary: Aragon tells the soldiers to hold their ground, and he shares their fear. He tells them that during the battle they will have courage, and that they will have an unbreakable bond of fellowship. They will not lose the battle or their spirits.
Tone: Inspirational, positive, energetic, determined
SOAPSTone Analysis
-"Red" is applying for parole, this is his "rehabilitation" speech
-Convincing the officers to put him on parole (2nd attempt)
-He is ready to re-enter society/not a threat
Speaker: Red, inmate in Shawshank Prison
Occasion: Shawshank State Prison, Main (1960's)
Audience: the parole officers
Purpose/summary: to tell the officers that he has changed, knows what he did wrong, but can't go back and change the person that he was. He has to live with the mistakes he made
Tone: apathetic, superior

(Brian Johnson) [closing narration] Dear Mr. Vernon, we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. But we think you're crazy to make an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us - in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain...

Speaker: Brian Johnson, "a brain", is in Saturday detention
Occasion: he has to write an essay about himself
Audience: Mr. Vernon
Purpose: to tell Mr. Vernon that they have discovered who they are
Summary: Letter to Mr. Vernon telling him that they do not want to be in Saturday detention, but accept the reality of it. Brian disagrees with Vernon's choice to make them write an essay about themselves. They realize the assignment was not a waste and they find out who they are.
Tone: Annoyed, honest, rebellious

(Red) There's not a day goes by I don't feel regret. Not because I'm in here, because you think I should. I look back on the way I was then: a young, stupid kid who committed that terrible crime. I want to talk to him. I want to try to talk some sense to him, tell him the way things are. But I can't. That kid's long gone, and this old man is all that's left. I got to live with that. Rehabilitated? It's just a bullshit word. So you go on and stamp your form, sonny, and stop wasting my time. Because to tell you the truth, I don't give a shit.
Ethos: Red has learned his lesson, no longer a danger to society

Pathos: Gaining sympathy by saying he is just an "old man"

Pathos: honesty about themselves and how they felt about that day/the assignment

Logos: explaining why they did not like the assignment, questioning it

Pathos: (emotional appeal) They have strong brotherhood bonds, the war is romanticised

Logos: (logical appeal/reasoning) They will fight more effectivly if they are confident/feel like they are going to win
