Plastic Pollution in Our Oceans
Transcript of Plastic Pollution in Our Oceans
-The plastic, releases carbon dioxide as well as harmful nutrients which is hazardous for the coral reefs.
-Excess nutrients result in poor water quality, leading to decreased oxygen and an increase in these foreign nutrients. This can lead to increases algal growth on reefs, thus crowding out corals.

-The development of human living starts run offs. Runoffs often carry large quantities of sediment from land-clearing, sewage out flows, and TRASH.
-Nearly 20 tons of plastic fragment (grocery bags, straws and soda bottles) are carried into the Pacific Ocean everyday!
-Over time the plastic doesn't simply "disappear" in fact the plastic continues to break down into thousands of tiny pieces! It is then in the water for the fish and other marine life to drink.

-Force plastic producers to come up with a way to recycle their products
-Make it a law, for plastic companies to be fined with improper disposal of their product.
- Try reducing the amount of plastic you use everyday
-Use proper techniques of recycling plastic when you HAVE to use it. Find somewhere in your home to place it, or make use of it.
Organize beach clean-ups!

- A small amount of plastic has been incinerated-producing some of the most toxic gases imaginable-EVERY OUNCE OF PLASTIC EVER MADE IS STILL ON OUR PLANET. Even when reduced to a single molecule, plastic remains too tough to biodegrade.
-Compounds found in some plastics have been linked to cancer and hormone disruption.
http://lifestyle.iloveindia.com/lounge/causes-and-effects-of-ocean-pollution-4443.html>. Life: Effects of plastic pollution on ... Animals:
-Marine plastic pollution has impacted at least 267 species worldwide, including 86% of all sea turtles, 44% of all seabird species and 43% of all marine mammal species.
-These impacts include ingestion, starvation, suffocation, infection, drowning, and entanglement.
http://www.nrdc.org/oceans/plastic-ocean/>. Thousands of plastic bottles and non-perishable materials are thrown into our oceans every year, these materials release harmful toxins that kill and poison marine life. Did you know? -Americans generate 10.5 million tons of PLASTIC waste a year but recycle only 1 or 2 % of it. -An estimated 14 billion pounds of trash-most of it plastic -is dumped in the world's oceans every year. -Plastic bags and other plastic garbage thrown into the ocean kill as many as 1 million marine animals and birds in the Pacific Ocean every year! It is our duty as citizens of planet earth to study plastic pollution in our oceans and become educated about the solutions, and its effect on our environment! RANDOM FACT:
- In 2010, a California grey whale washed up dead on the shores of Puget Sound. Autopsies indicated that its stomach contained a pair of Pants, and a golf ball, more than 20 plastic bags, small towels, duct tape and surgical gloves. Counter Arguement: The clean up of these gyres aren't 100% attainanable!
- "Why waste money on the ocean when we have greater political problems?"
-The clean up of our oceans would cost billions of dollars and take the help and dedication from millions of people! Even if we put in 10 years of sweat and hard work, the oceans would never be even 60% plastic free. " Plastics in our Oceans."
