Spring

The Baroque Concerto

Movement Two

Movement One

Violin Concerto in E Major, 3/4 meter, "La primavera" (Spring) - II. Largo e pianissimo sempre

Baroque musicians composed two types of concertos; the solo concerto and the concerto grosso.

Solo Violin Concerto in E Major, 3/4 meter "La primavera" (Spring) - I. Allegro

Vivaldi puts out an image from the poem of the shepard who sleeps, " in a pleasant, flowery meadow" with his faithful dog by his side. The image of the barking dog is represented by the repeated rhythmic part played by the violas.

Spring is clearly pronounced in this first movement, with the presentation of birds, meadows, gentle breezes, and including storms.

This movement is also ,clearly, sectioned off into ritornellos and episodes.

The Solo Concerto

The Concerto Grosso

This concerto was made for a small group of solo instruments with a larger group of accompanying instruments.

This is a concerto for solo instrument and accompanying instrumental group.

Movement Three

Violin Concerto in E Major,12/8 meter, "La primavera" (Spring) - III. Danza pastorale: Allegro

Joyful Spring has arrived,

the birds greet it with their cheerful song,

and the brooks in the gentle breezes

flow with a sweet murmur.

The sky is covered with black mantle

and thinderand lightening announce a storm.

When they fall silent, the little birds

take up again their melodious song.

And in the pleasant, flowery meadow,

to the gentle murmur of bushes and trees,

the goat herd sleeps, his ffaithful dog at his side.

To the festive sounds of a rustic bagpipe

nymphs and shepards dance in their favoutite spot

when spring appears in its brilliance.

the final movement is a 'danza pastorale' or a rustic dance and you can visualize the nymphs and shepards dancing in the fields (violins) against the drone of bagpipes, which is being imitated in the lower strings. This movement is also in ritornello form. The ritornellos and solo passages alternate leading the work to a happy conclusion.

The Four Seasons

One of Vivaldi's best known works is this group of four violin concerti. Each concerto is accompanied by a poem, which is unusual for the Baroque period, describing the joys of that particular season which is supposed to evoke feelings in the listener. Vivaldi separates each concerto into three movements, which have the pattern, fast - slow - fast.
