Classroom Management is Key!
Poor classroom management is the main cause of bad behavior... not discipline
Discipline is concerned with how students behave
Procedures are concerned with how things are done
The more capable the teacher, the more successful the student.
Effective teachers spend most of the first 2 weeks teaching students to follow class procedures.
Procedures provide a foundation that leads to high student achievement.

Set the classroom expectations and test drive them for a bit. Get rid of things that aren't working. Or revise them. It's okay to add as well. Talk to your students about it, so they'll know what you expect.

LEQ #1– What strategies teachers can use to maintain classroom management?
The designated paper passer will give each student a hand out of important facts talking about classroom management. Using the Elmo, we will discuss and model some examples of what we feel are important behavioral and physical environment classroom management strategies. The students will high light at least ten examples of theses strategies (five of behavioral, and five of physical environment). Then they will list them in their journal.
Divide the students into equal teams. Create a T-Chart on student’s own paper. One student will list classroom management (behavioral) and the other student will list classroom management (physical environment). Place each item in order of importance to the student. (list a minimum of 6 items according to what the student thinks is the most important to them). Then the students will turn and talk to their peers about why they have placed them in the order they have.
ESE students: peer with a higher-level student. The student will list only two strategies and two will be given as an example.
ELL students: Spanish dictionary, pictures of some items like seating charts, rules, and pictures of teachers demonstrating hand signals.
Gifted: Write a paragraph of a minimum of at least six sentences on how their classroom would function using these types of strategies.
2. The teacher will draw a name from the “name can” and on the white board a student will list a behavioral and physical environment strategy that they wrote from their journal and write “S” for strong and “W” for weak. The student will then draw a name from the “name can” until everyone has had a turn.

The students will watch a You Tube video from the Teaching Channel on, New Teacher Survival Guide: Classroom Management. As the movie plays we will think about the ineffectiveness of the teacher and how through one on one tutoring, the new teacher realizes how she can become a more effective teacher. We will replay the video and pause it at
key points to discuss the ineffectiveness of the new teacher. The teacher will model and act out an example of an ineffective strategy.
Then the students will turn to a shoulder partner and discuss why my teaching style was ineffective. Turn to a shoulder partner and talk about how I could have been more effective. On the white board we will give the examples from the discussion. On a piece of paper each student will write how the teacher was ineffective and then write what the teacher could have done to be more effective. The video will play and see if the student’s idea is on the right track.
One student will go into another teacher’s classroom. The student will observe the teacher and students. Then the student will write notes on what he or she observed. The notes should be written good enough to write an observation paper on the effective or ineffectiveness of the teacher. The student will be graded on a rubric scale that would be previously handed to them.
