A "pro-choice" research team in New Zealand concluded that abortion in young women is associated with increased risks of major depression, anxiety disorder, suicidal behaviors, and substance abuse.

Aborted Baby: 1st Trimester
Pregnancies were terminated in ancient times through methods including:
administration of abortifacient herbs
the use of sharp tools
the application of abdominal pressure
Abortion laws and their enforcement have fluctuated through various eras.

In many western nations during the 20th century, various women's rights groups, doctors, and social reformers worked to repeal abortion bans.

While abortion remains legal in most of the West, this legality is regularly challenged by anti-abortion groups.

Partial Birth Abortion Illustration
There are 1.1 million U.S. abortions each year.
Nearly 1 in 4 pregnancies end in abortion
50% of women now seeking abortion have had at least one previous abortion.
Approximately 1/3 of American women have had an abortion by age 45
Why Women Want An Abortion
What You Didn't Know
The most common method of abortion
- typically between 14-20 weeks of pregnancy)
“It seems to me clear as daylight that abortion would be a crime.”
– Gandhi
Cervix is dialated
A suction curette (a tube with a sharp tip) is inserted into uterus.
The strong suction (29 times the power of a household vacuum) tears the baby’s body apart and sucks it through the hose into a container.
Fear of the parent's reaction.
New parents are financially unstable.
Dependency on legality of abortion.
Father figure will leave relationship.
Future grandparents are pressuring termination of pregnancy.
Pregnancy was an accident.
Effects of pregnancy on the body.
"It's not a baby, it's just a blob of tissue."
The pregnancy was a result of rape.
Saline Injection
A 20% salt solution is injected through the mother’s abdomen into the baby’s amniotic fluid.
The baby ingests solution and dies of salt poisoning, dehydration, and hemorrhaging of the brain.
The baby’s skin is burned off.
A dead or dying baby is delivered.
A hormone-like compound is injected into the muscle of the uterus causing intense contractions and pushing out the baby.
The violent contractions often crush the baby to death
Many babies have been born alive using this procedure, then left to die.
A baby born alive is usually left unattended to die, though some have survived.
Dilation and Evacuation (D&E)
Forceps are inserted into the uterus, grabbing and twisting the baby’s body to dismember it.
If the head is too large it must be crushed in order to remove it.
Performed up to 18 weeks
Performed during second half of pregnancy
Menstral (Suction)
This technique was originally developed the in concentration camps in Nazi Germany

Roe v. Wade
Appellant Jane Roe sought a declaratory judgment that the statutes were unconstitutional to prevent defendant Dallas County District Attorney from enforcing the statutes. Roe then sued on behalf of herself and all other women similarly situated, claiming that the statutes were unconstitutionally vague and denied her right of personal privacy, protected by the First, Fourth, Fifth, Ninth, and Fourteenth Amendments. The Court found that an abortion statute that forbids all abortions except in the case of a life saving procedure on behalf of the mother is unconstitutional due to the right to privacy. However, it does allow for regulation of abortion when the statute is narrowly tailored, such as the health of the mother or the viable fetus. The court declined to address the question of when life begins.
Argued:Dec. 1971
Decided: Jan. 1973
In the case of Roe v. Wade, abortion was ruled illegal with the exception of using abortion in order to save the mother's life.
