- The strength of the echo received from the ionosphere measures the number of electrons able to scatter radio waves or what we call electron pressure.
Why do radars use microwaves?
Microwaves are good for transmitting information from one place to another because microwave energy can penetrate haze, light rain and snow, clouds, and smoke.
Police officers use radar to detect the speed of the motorists who drive over the speed limit.
NASA uses radar to map the Earth and other planets to track satellites and space debris.
Meteorologists use radar to track storms, hurricanes and tornadoes.
A transmit/receive switch that tells the antenna when to transmit and when to receive the pulses.

History of Radar
Radar was secretly developed by several nations before and during World War II.
Radar had many uses during the war - it was used for locating enemy ships and aircraft.
It was immediately employed as part of England's defensive strategy against sea and air attacks.
One of the earliest practical radar systems was devised by Sir Robert Watson-Watt, a Scots physicist.

Radar can Measure Temperature
- as the temperature increases, the electrons move faster. Radar can act like a thermometer and measure temperature of ionosphere.
Radar is based on the principle of sending very long wavelength radiation (called microwaves) from an antenna, and then detecting that energy after it bounces off a remote target.
It refers to the technique of using radio waves to detect the presence of objects in the atmosphere.
The military uses radar to detect their enemy's artillery as well as their own machinery.
