How important is technological convergence for institutions and audiences within a media area which you have studied? Introduction;
Reword the question and outline exactly what you intend to discuss. Within the music industry technological convergence has been both beneficial and detrimental to media insitutions and media audiences. As web 1.0 has been replaced by the creative and collaborative entity that is web 2.0 along with converging technologies such as the Iphone and more recently the Ipad, the production, distribution and consumption of music has significantly changed. This essay will examine and evaluate the importance and the effects that converging technologies have had in the music industry, drawing upon case studies from both major and minor music lables to aid and illustrate discussion. Main Body;
Ensure that you discuss one idea per paragraph and that you incorporate the appropriate media language. What is technological convergence?
Give an outline of what it means and give some examples such as the Iphone, Ipad, Mobile phones You could begin to dicuss web 2.0 and how as technologies have converged we have seen growth in the creativity and collaboration online. Think about MySpace and how unsigned acts can create their own music, upload it to MySpace and offer free downloads of it.
Discuss the benefits of this is Unsigned acts, Majors and then also the disadvantage to Majors. This could allow you to move onto discussing Downloading.
The Change from CD to MP3. Benefits to consumer could be discussed and how you can have an entire record collection in the plam of your hand. Also think about consumption and how having a small file throws up loads of choice about what people do with the music. You could discuss mash ups, sampling, file sharing etc, Ensure you discuss the benefits and disadvantages for both majors and indies......what about piracy?
Discuss Apple and how they persuaded the majors to come on board with Itunes. What benefits do Itunes present to both institutions and consumers? How do theur profits benefit? Conclusion: Sum up your main ideas and arguments. Incorporating the question again.
