The author
The Play
Written in 1894 in England, this play is a satire based on the decadence of the Victorian aristocracy in late 19th century in London.
Social Context
Wilde was a leader of the “Aesthetic Movement”, which professed a belief in “art for art’s sake”.

The Victorian Era
London, 1895; first a bachelor flat in the city, and then a manor house in the country.
He was born on October 16th, 1854 in Dublin, Ireland. He was educated at Oxford University.
His mother was a journalist and poet, and his father was a physician.
In 1884 he married Constance Lloyd and they had two children.
Wilde had a relation with a man called Lord Alfred, son of the Marquess of Queensberry.

He was publicly accused by the Marquess of being a sodomite and was sent to prison.
After his release from prison, he sought exile in France where he died on November 30th, 1900.
He was known for his choice of style, which consisted of a velvet coat, black silk stockings, a soft loose shirt, and a large flowing tie. He also carried a jewel-topped cane and gloves.

He was considered a "dandy"

An era of great prosperity for Great Britain.
Improvements allowed an educated middle class to develop.
Social morality and customs were very strict.

Increase in disparity between the very wealth and the very poor.
The Elite valued history, heritage, lineage and the continuity of their family line.
The Elite did not have to work but enjoyed a life of luxury and leisure.
Prostitution and sexual activity between males was considered a criminal act and punished with prison.
