Early Life
Born April 29, 1899 in Washington, D.C.
Started piano at age 7
He composed his first song, "Soda Fountain Rag", at 15
Began professional playing at 17
Professional Life
Performed in New York clubs in the 20s
Was the bandleader of a sextet (eventually 10-piece ensemble)
He recruited musicians with odd playing styles
He composed over 3000 songs
Ellington's blend of complex rhythms, catchy melodies and movements was completely new
