Introduction:

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a novel written by Stephen Chbosky.

It is written as a first person narrative in the form of letters written by the main character.

The main character is a boy named Charlie who is learning how to navigate life as a freshman in high school.

Charlie writes about his life and experiences in letters to an "anonymous friend."
Summary

The Perks of being a wallflower is all about a boy named Charlie finding a way to participate in life. Starting high school was a difficult transition for Charlie. His only friend had commit suicide, his aunt passed away, and his big brother left for college right before the start of his freshman year. As a result of these trials, Charlie was living his life from the sidelines, watching everybody else live theirs'. Then, Charlie meets Patrick and his step-sister Sam. Patrick is a senior and naturally begins to take Charlie under his wing. Meanwhile, Sam becomes a love interest of Charlie's. Through his new friends and experiencing new things, Charlie is able to come to terms with his past and move forward. He finally learns how to participate in life again. Through his letters, we get to watch him grow and mature throughout the novel.
Charlie
Charlie is the protagonist of the story.
Charlie is a wallflower. This means he is awkward, and seen as a social outcast.
He is an introvert, reserved, quiet, and observant.
Charlie is analytical, he looks at situations from an unpopular perspective and looks at every aspect of the situation as if it is a problem to be solved.
Charlie is very caring and protective of his friends.
I believe the trials in Charlie's life caused him to react to situations the way he did. I think they taught Charlie to proceed with caution through life.
Patrick
Patrick is the senior that takes Charlie under his wing.
Patrick is a closeted homosexual.
He is the type to be the "life of the party."
He is always the loudest guy in the room.
Patrick shows a lot of outward confidence to hide his own insecurities.
You see Patrick's insecurity show through the way he drinks, parties, and always draws attention to himself.
Sam
Sam is Patrick's step-sister and also Charlie's crush.
She is compassionate towards everyone, always sees the best in people.
Sam is very beautiful but also very humble.
She is an optimist, always looking forward to the future and putting the past behind her.
She is very free-spirited and adventurous.
She had a difficult past when she was growing up but doesn't use it as an excuse not to be happy.

Wrapping Up
This novel is all about growing up, self discovery, and moving forward. I think an important lesson we can all pull from this novel is learning to put the past behind us and move forward. Life is too short to dwell on the past.

I would recommend this book. The novel is a coming of age story and teaches a lot of valuable lessons about growing up. I think it is a worthy read for students in high school still trying to figure life out.
Important Quotes:

"I would die for you, but I won't live for you"

"But even if we don't have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there"
More Important quotes:
"Enjoy it. Because it's happening"

"This moment will just be another story some day"
