Emotional Development from One to Three By : Hannah & Isabelle Emotional Patterns Individual Differences Eighteen Months Three and Three 1/2 years Specific Emotions Two-Two 1/2 years Emotional adjustments Emotional development tends to go in cycles
throughout childhood.Babies start developing new emotions that they have never felt before. There are command similarities to how children develop emotionally. But, all children develop at their own pace. Children become self centered at 18 months. At two years, the baby is more patient. Usually a three year old is a lot happier
than a two year old, they are also more willing to take directions from others. Specific emotions include anger, fear,
jealousy, love and affection, and empathy The most important clue is the relationship between child with their parents or their other care givers Individual differences are most noticeable between 1 and 4 years old. the differences are caused because of the experiences the baby has already had. The experiences of twins or triplets will be different from the experience from other children, same with a family with only one child from a family with five children The toddler is most likely to do the opposite of what someone says, at this age their favorite word is saying no. They are able to communicate what they want They also express love and affection freely and looks for praise in return. This age is more difficult then the 18 month stage. At this stage they are not as easily distracted children at this age also need consistency . They are a lot more talkative Three and 1/2 year olds are insecure, most parents may feel the child is moving more backwards then forwards in development. Some children develop bad habits such as nail biting and thumb sucking to provide self comfort. Anger is the child's way to show frustration. Fear is something the child gets frighted from and feels uncomfortable- a common fear is separation anxiety. Jealousy is an emotion that usually comes upon a child around age two- sibling rivalry is the competition between siblings for parents attention. Love and affection is the relationship children have with others. Empathy is when a baby understands how another person feels Another indicator of emotional adjustment is the child's relationship with their sibling If emotional problems are dealt with early, it can make a difference for a life time Promote Positive Self-Concept & Self Esteem Self-concept is how people see themselves. Young children believe what others say about them Discourage Negative Behavior Parents worry that correcting misbehavior will damage their child's self-concept. Ways to discourage negative behaviors are: Explore feelings Acknowledge feelings Give choices Importance of Adequate Sleep Adequate sleep is as essential
to good physical and emotional health Being sleep deprived can effect a child's temperament and ability to do simple tasks Ways to make your baby not be sleep deprived: Determine a child's best bedtime Limit toys in the bed Establish a bedtime routine Keeping bedtime pleasant what is the difference between self-concept and self esteem Self esteem is how highly you value yourself What are the
