What is a WIG?
Our WIGs should define what we do. They should make clear what our top priorities are that define success.
A Wildly Important Goal
"From x to y by when."
WIGs need to be in the correct format because it makes them measurable.
WIGs need to be SMART Goals
When writing the WIG, start with a mission, turn it into a goal with lag measures then develop lead measures to drive the goal
For Example: A mission could be that all mildly disabled students be served within the MTSS continuum.
A Sample WIG with lag measures for that mission could be: 80% of students with mild disabilities within the priority schools, focus schools and all high schools will be served within the MTSS continuum. (Core and tier II or tier II)
Next lead measures or indicators are developed to help us drive our WIG?

Make a list of what you believe are the important things for the team to accomplish
How will we go from X to Y by When
Record the WIG using the lag measures

Percent of mildly disabled students receiving the AIMSweb universal screener
Percent of mildly disabled students receiving core instruction defined as tier 1.
Percent of mildly disabled students receiving supplemental instruction in tier II
Percent of mildly disabled students receiving intensive instruction in tier III
Sample Lead Measures
A specific goal must answer the six W's
Who: Who is involved?
What: What do I want to accomplish?
Where: Identify a location.
When: Establish a time frame.
Which: Identify requirements and constraints.
Why: Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal.
Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of each set goal
How can we measure how we are progressing on our goal?
How OFTEN will I MEASURE our progress? Quarterly? Yearly?
Your goals must be something you have the ability to attain in a set time frame
In order for your goals to be realistic, they must represent and objective that you are both willing and able to work toward. The goal has to be within your circle of influence.
A goal without a goal without a time frame is not frequently met. Setting a time frame increases the sense of urgency and gives you a target for your goal.
The more specific you are the better your WIGs will fit
You have 5 minutes to brainstorm and compile your own list
There should be no discussion at this time
Look at your list and circle the two things you believe are most important to the team right now.
Next determine the lag measures for both WIGs
Test both your WIGs against the questions from the handout
This will help determine if your goal is acceptable
Make any needed adjustments
Both of the groups final WIGs should be displayed where everyone can see to assist with lead measure creation
The lead measure is designed to move the lag measure
They measure what you do to get results in the lag measure

Repeat the process used to create the WIGs to create two lead measures per wig.
Start with your first WIG
Individually brainstorm, then choose your top two
Without discussion share our round-robin
The facilitator will lead discussion of each idea
The team will vote for the top two lead measures per WIG
Test measure against handout and adjust
Upon completion both WIGs and lead measures should be displayed.
Now that our goals are set, reflect on how you can drive us toward our goals
As a team determine how we will keep score! (who, where and when data is collected)
Each individual share our their two ideas in round-robin format
No discussion is allowed at this point
Members may pass if they have no additional ideas
The group facilitator should copy down all ideas and display them
The facilitator will go down the list and the group will discuss each item
The top two wigs will be chosen by vote
Lag vs Lead Measure
So what’s the difference between a Lag Measure and a Lead Measure? Think in terms of loosing weight. Ever measure your weight on a scale? That’s a lag measure. A key lead measure to loosing weight might be keeping track how many times a week you exercised 30 minutes a day. Another lead measure would be, tracking how many calories you ate per day. Both lead measures will impact the lag measure.
Things to Consider when Creating a Lead Measure
Lead Measures should be:
Can track from day 1
Do we have power to affect the measure?
Do they represent the most impactful things the team can do to drive achievement of the WIG?
Are the measures worth pursuing?
Is every measure quantified including quality measures?
