Using social media to engage the public
I fucking Love Science
is a community built for the posting and sharing of scientific updates, quotes, cartoons, jokes and photographs. Started as a Facebook page in 2012 by the British blogger Elise Andrews, the page had just under 6.5 million likes in August 2013. Her twitter feed has 47k followers.
"Social Media gives us an amazing opportunity to reach new people. All those people who were turned off of science at school, because of a poor curriculum, or bad teachers or parents who just didn't see that it's important - we can show them that they should want to learn, not because they have to but because this stuff is fucking cool. We've got a second chance to capture them."
Crowdfunding is more than raising money. It creates real, measurable engagement and increases ownership and support of science through social dialogue.

Whether you are looking for a master’s degree, a school class, a K-12 curriculum, or study programme there are now more than 20 websites that offer high-quality science education for free. Many of these are so-called "massive open online courses (MOOCs) - attracting millions of students from all countries, backgrounds and age-groups.
is an education company that partners with the top universities and organizations in the world. EU Partners to date: Geneva, Copenhagen, Leiden, Edinburgh, LMU Munich, EP Paris
is the outgrowth of free computer science classes offered in 2011 through Stanford University. Udacity had students in 203 countries in the summer of 2012, rangeing from 13-year-olds to 80-year-olds.
was founded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University to offer online university-level courses in a wide range of disciplines to a worldwide audience at no charge. The two institutions have each contributed $30 million of resources to the nonprofit project.
There is a growing body of knowledge about teaching and learning in informal learning environments such as museums, after-school programs, and home settings. However, most science education still takes place in classrooms. Bringing 'real science' into schools it therefore essential for good science education.
Science in School
aims to promote inspiring science teaching by encouraging communication between teachers, scientists, and everyone else involved in European science education. The initiative is funded by EIROforum (8t of Europe’s largest inter-governmental scientific research organisations.

An interest in science cannot be forced, it has to be nurtured. What better way to do so than over some food, in a comfortable and informal setting?
European Policy Pairing & Placement Schemes
Several European Associations and Societies have created pairing and placement schemes in order to build bridges between parliamentarians, civil servants and the research scientists of their communities. These help MPs and civil servants establish longstanding links with practising research scientists and to help research scientists understand political decision making and its associated pressures.
NERC's Policy Placement Scheme allows researchers to work closely with policy-makers and third sector policy-makers to work within the NERC head office, research centres or collaborative research centres.
CSaP's Policy Fellowships are for two years. Policy Fellows spend time at the University meeting senior researchers and attending workshops and seminars. They join the Policy Fellows Network, made up of other Policy Fellows from Whitehall and industry, as well as the range of researchers.
Both the French Academie des Sciences and the British Royal Society Run Pairing Schemes. Scientists are paired with either an MP or civil servant to establish longstanding links.
