think of Common Core and
text complexity? Quantitative Measurement Why does text
matter? Today’s students are
not college and career
ready in terms of reading,
and schools must give
them the tools to succeed
in this area. Common Core Standards require that schools implement more challenging texts in each grade level and include more informational texts. If we are not teaching the skills to read complex and informational texts in our classrooms, students will only get information from here “The inherent difficulty of reading and comprehending a text combined with consideration of reader and task variables; in the Standards, a three-part assessment of text difficulty that pairs qualitative and quantitative measures with reader-task considerations.”
CCSS Appendix A Measures such as: Common Core Lexile Levels Reader and Task considerations – background knowledge of reader, motivation, interests, and complexity generated by tasks assigned often best made by educators employing their professional judgment. Reader and Task Quantitative measures – readability and other scores of text complexity often best measured by computer software. Quantitative Qualitative measures – levels of meaning, structure, language conventionality and clarity, and knowledge demands often best measured by an attentive human reader. Informational text and literary
non-fiction for both elementary
and secondary grades includes:
Historic non-fiction
Biographies and auto-biographies
Historical documents
Technical documents In elementary grades this includes stories and poetry for both read alouds and independent reading. Read alouds include chapter books, even at the kindergarten level.
In secondary grades this includes novels, short stories, poetry, and drama. Literary Text Pair an early reading book, even a picture book, with informational texts containing pictures. This benefits students because they are exposed to academic vocabulary and small portions of a complex text at an early age.
