Walt Disney By Mitchell Harrison Period 5 The Birth of Walt Disney Walter Elias Disney was born on December 5th, 1901, in Chicago, Illinois. His parents were Elias Disney and Flora Call Disney. He also had a sister, Ruth Disney, and 3 brothers, Herbert, Roy, and Raymond Disney. Teenage Years In 1917, Disney began is freshman year at McKinley High school, and took night courses at the Art Institute of Chicago. He dropped out of high school at age 16 to join the Army. Flora and Elias Disney Ruth and Walt Disney Walt and his ambulance Plan B Walt was rejected from the Army for being underage. His next plan was to join the Red Cross. Soon after joining he was sent to France for one year, where he drove an ambulance, but only after the armistice was signed on November 11, 1918. Working Together After moving back to Kansas City for his artistic career, Walt made a business with a friend named Ubbe Iwerks. the business was called "Iwerks-Disney Commercial Artists." Walt left for a while to earn money at Kansas City Film and Ad Company. Unable to run the business alone, Iwerks soon joined him. Walt made cutout animation there, and became interested in animation. Disney became an animator, and being much more promising, he did cel animation. Laugh-O-Gram Studios Walt Disney decided to open his own animation business, recruiting a co-worker from Kansas, Fred Harman. Walt and Harman later secured a deal with local theater owner, Frank L. Newman. Probably the most popular "showman" in town. Frank agreed to show their cartoons at his local theater, called "Laugh-O-Grams." Unfortunately, the business failed from insufficient funds. Off to California! A California Adventure Walt and his brother Roy pooled up some money and set up their own animation studio in Hollywoodland, California. Walt sent an unfinished print to a New York Distributor, Margaret Winkler, for feedback. Margaret said that she wanted to see more live-action films. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit In 1927, Iwerks came up with a new series and character: Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Mickey and Friends Mickey Mouse was drawn by Iwerks and voiced by Walt until 1947. Mickey Mouse became a popular cartoon with a pet dog, Pluto, Donald Duck, Goofy, and Mickey's wife, Minnie Mouse. Steamboat Willie Steamboat Willie is the first and most successful sound film.

Hear him whistle his tune below! Academy Awards Walt received 278 Academy Awards for all his films. Even a full- size Oscar with 7 miniature Oscars in honor of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs! Disneyland Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955. A place of yesterday, fantasy, adventure, and tomorrow. Disneyland was a success for people of all ages, thanks to Walt.
